sorry to beat a dead horse..building a new system and i've skipped upgrading the power supply for 3 years now and wanted to know if I can still hold off or I need to bite the bullet and up the ps. Currently I have the Antec True Power 330W ps.

System specs:

amd xp3200+
msi kt400 mobo
gf6800 gt
1gb pc 3200 ram
2 samsung spinpoint 160gb's
1 cdrw (haven't used in over 2 yrs)
1 dvdrom (haven't used in over 2 yrs)
sb audigy 1
2 case fans

You know... it's not like a PS is thousands of dollars. Get a solid 450W PSU from one of the good companies and you'll be fine.

Look for a PS with a high amperage rating on the +12V. I've been using Rosewill PSU's with 30A to 35A ratings.

I feel they are the most bang for the buck these days.

Others will only feel comfortable with brands such as you mentioned along with OCZ and Fortron among others.

This is a much discussed topic here. Should be lots of info in a search.

If it's running fine, no need to replace anything. It can't hurt trying to run the setup with the True330.

Things like Antec and Enermax are still good, but you can get the same PSU for a bit less by buying an XClio (they're made by the same folks at Channel Well). Fortron/Sparkle (FSP-####), Seasonic (quietest, from what I've heard), and Topower (OCZ uses this company) should also all be good bets.

boomerang: By chance, do you have the UL file number (in the format E######) on that Rosewill? I'm curious to see who supplies parts for it.

no i haven't built the new rig..the 330w is powering something a bit older..i'm having random cpu freezes (hear static through speakers, system freezes) but i'm certain its because of heat issues (cpu is in a cabinet running idle at 56 load at 62 c)..

I'm expecting to have another one on the porch this Thursday. I'll take a look.
