Is anandtech forums a part of double click ?

When I am surfing the forums I click on a thread and after it loads I hear another click.
When this happens I have to click the back button twice to return to the previous page.
so I clicked the history arrow next to the back botton and I see http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/n2524.247
What the Hell is that!
Do i have some spy ware on my pc That only activates its self on the forum?
Does anyone know what this is.
I don't like my personal info being logged by doubleclick.

I don't want to sound like an ass but ... why are you so happy about the fact that you are paying for something that you and the rest of us made what it is? The ammount is of no importance.

I see what you mean, but realistically, a forum of this size must use enormous amounts of bandwidth, and that ain't free.

Oh and as for the original poster, I think you'll have a greater chance of hearing from someone who know if you post in the forum issues forum.
 
Economic pressures on web sites is not good for forum.
Take a look at OCWorkbench forums. Its like your posting under the rule of a dictatorship.
I hope Anandtech forums never get like that along with advertising biased editorial.

How many great sites have been lost or are currently teetering on the edge of dissolution? Storage Review was just barely saved, and Zdnet is burning cash and losing backers (not that I'm a big fan of Ziff Davis). Anandtech is one of the greatest computer review sites on the Internet. Their reviews are head and shouders above the others. Many of us find this worth paying for. I get more information here than I ever would from a computer magazine subscription so the cost is very justifiable.
 
I agree with st4rcutter not that it matters but last year there were a lot more sites out there

also i look at anandtech and a few others as learning tools so i am willing to pay those sites that i learn from especially those where i get to ask the questions and can darn sure count on an answer!

you know i payed for my subscription as a way to say thank you to all the people here and to the site but the joke was on me(i'm on dial up) i get almost the same speeds i had when i was using dsl so i guess i only helped myself😉

yes i know i'm not as savy as most of the people here on computer fixes but this site has taught me to push my limits by making sure i know what i'm talking about(got a link?) and by doing the searches and following thru by helping when i can and admiting when i can't .

in other words the standards here are pretty high and that raises the bar i have to try for.And try i will because i won't/can't leave a debt unpaid.

Ungrateful bastard...I suppose it is totally free to support forums that have 85,000 members huh? The bandwith that comes along with that not to mention having a major review site. If you can do better for FREE then please tell us your secret

More hits from you guys the larger the fee the site can command for advertising space, yeah?
I can understand a case for subscription to support a site like Ars or Storage review that havent really been in a position to demand high revenue from their advertising, but when you see the Home page plastered in advertising, yadda, yadda - hmmm?
This said, i too would be prepared to subscribe if i thought Anandtech was on shaky ground.
Sorry im just too sceptical to be drawn into the subscription mullarky im afraid.
Hope you guys dont mind me playing devils advocate 😉
 
I think that those that are skeptical about the subscriber forums, don't understand the costs of running a site like this. You should go out and do some research on how "well" internet advertising is doing these days, not very. The forums account for over 50% of the sites bandwidth due to the large threads and pure data driven application, bandwidth is not cheap, as some might think, especially when a site has sustained well into the 25 mbit/s range. The move to cap bandwidth is a good one, and for those that can't deal with that, we offer a paying subscriber service which costs less than renting 1 movie during a month. If you don't feel that these forums are worth that to you, we can't help you. There is no other forum with the kind of information and community that we have here, we are the largest IT forum on the web. We want to keep this resource here for years to come, and to do that business decisions have to be made. Subscribers will be getting more features, and benefits, down the road that will further enhance the benefits of being a Subscriber.

While the users are the most important part of the community, its naive to think that there aren't other factors that keep something like this running. Staff, software costs, hardware costs, bandwidth costs. They all add up rather quickly when it takes a server farm to run these forums. The cold hard facts are that it takes business sense to keep a internet based business around these days, look at Delphi, whom have recently announced their model is changing to a fee based model. Pretty evident where things are going. You don't just slap some banner ads on a site and become a millionaire anymore 🙂.

Any chance of you giving forum access/query priority to subscribers so they dont have to sit waiting for the page to load etc. Then all the freeloaders 😉 will have to join the que - a bit like Fileplanet?

I can count on one hand the times that I've had pages not load. Considering how much money this forum has saved me, $30 a year is nothing. Rationalize it however you want, but save your nickels and dimes and subscribe.

You are missing the point. The forums are not anandtech's they are ours. We make them what they are. I can't say in any way how they can ask as to pay for something that we as a community have created. This could be hosted on my homeserver for what it matters.

I never complained about the 100 ads so I'm not ungratefull, I realise that what ever the forums are running one costs money. However IMHO (I emphasize the words MY and OPINION) it's a a disgrace to charge as for what is ours. If they have problems with the bandwidth and the storage then they should do the best they can with the money from the ads and limit the history.

By forcing non subscribing members to use dead slow servers is out of order.

$30 for the forums, $30 for the internet connection, $30 for the newsgroup account, $30 for the SoonToHaveToPayForYahooEmailAccount, $30 for anonymous surfing ... do you see a pattern here?

I agree. I was a member of the forums for about two weeks before I decided to subscribe. The subscriber servers are definitely worth the $2.50 per month (1 time payment of $30 on the CC).

You can have that opinion all you want. You've been told that it's not reasonable to try to fund a forum this large on banner costs alone. Call me crazy, but I don't remeber anyone saying that a subscription fee was turning any sort of profit. Don't have a right? Of couse they have a right. It's up to the userbase whether to pay or not. The free forum is still here and it won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe, with enough subscribers, they'll be able to bump up the bandwidth cap a bit, but who knows.

$30 here:

- For a year (not $30 a month for an ISP)
- If you spend any time in Hot Deals, I'd wager that you'll easily save 10 times your subscribtion cost. (If not make a profit)
- You can further save some money by buying/selling in FS/FT
- You want tech support or advice? This forum has, as members, some of the most helpful, knowledgeable individuals around who freely and gladly offer up advice.
- Have no life? We've got a veritable buttload of kiddies in OT that you can pal around with.

Yeah, we could all collectively agree to pack up and go to another forum (who would, in turn, have to find some way to deal with the massive amounts of bandwidth). As far as I'm concerned: "It won't be happening".

Yeah, I'd love an extra $30 and yes, little costs add up. Right now, I'm juggling bills to see which one(s) I don't pay from month-to-month. (The life of a starving actor). Two less "Big Slams" a month and I know that the subscription fee is paid for. Those Big Slams aren't the best thing for singin'/dancin' neither. 😉
