Is an Xbox live account only usable from the owner's Xbox?

My Xbox is on its way here and I just bought Halo 2. My friend is letting my borrow his Xbox and i have it plugged into my router. I have been playing Halo 2 single player.

My question is, if I sign up for Xbox live right now using the code that came with my copy of Halo 2, will I still be able to play on my Xbox when it gets here?

Is an Xbox Live account unique to one Xbox or is there a username and password type of thing where I can use my account from any Xbox?

Thanks in advance, this forum has all the answers. :)

It is not tied to a specific console. You can use your Xbox live account on any Xbox.

Yes you get a username and passcode... you can save your XBL information to a memory card and then use it wherever. There is also an "Account Recovery" option in the Xbox dashboard once you install XBL.. it will allow you to then put in your billing info or whatever and it'll get your XBL information to that Xbox.
