if I want a high capacity mp3 player which I can hook up to my pioneer deh-p8600mp head unit and have charging capability and full control through the headunit?

I have about 34GB of mp3s and would like an mp3 player which could at the very least hold all of my music so the 20 and 30gb versions are out of the question. I was thinking about getting a refurbished 40GB from apple for $250. It comes with a dock and 1 year waranty. Worth it? I don't care about status symbols or if anyone gives a fvck whether I have an ipod or not. I just want something that's functional and works with my headunit.

I'm not familiar with that head unit, has Pioneer teamed up with Apple to make it work this way? Or is the head unit just designed to access a USB hard drive for MP3s? Either way I'd suggest running a wire under the upholstery from a head unit with a line-in, mounting the player (whichever one you decide on) on the car's console, and controlling it via the player itself. This gives you more flexibility; it will play more than just mp3s, it has updatable firmware, etc.

Well it seems like pretty much all of the headunits out now offer an ipod hookup that allows for control of the ipod through the headunit itself, including showing the track titles on the screen. I'm afraid it I get an mp3 player which I have to control through the mp3 player itself it'll be too dangerous to use while I'm driving.

edit: also this way I can hide the ipod in the glovebox or something instead of having it out on display.

That head unit will only control the iPod with the optional $140 iPod adapter kit:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/p.../detail/0,,2076_4039_192089315,00.html

I imagine you'll see similar things from other companies too. I wonder if sony makes one that will work with my head unit, that'd be really nice.

Edit: The only way that adapter will work with any other MP3 player is if it uses the iPod connector. Since I'm sure no other device uses it, it looks like an iPod is your only option.

Most other head units only have a line in jack, which won't let you control it obviously.

I have a pioneer headunit with that pionner-ipod adaptor. It works Ok but you will only see the first 8 letters of your album name or song name ( that sometimes can be a problem), it also takes time to scroll through albums (a lot of time). The only thing to do is put your songs in playlists and scroll through the playlists.

..and you can get the adaptor for less than 100 bucks online

why does all your music have to be on the player? why can't it be a flash player, and rotate your music from your PC hard drives

exactly. my head unit can already read mp3 cds. they just don't hold enough data.
