Is an Ipod connected via USB 2.0 suppose to charge it?

I just bought a USB 2.0 pci card to use with my Ipod 15GB 3gen.

I know that firewire 6pin charges the Ipod, but what about USB 2.0? Mines does not charge when plugged in and I heard that it is supposed to.

I believe it can, depending on the port - all USB ports aren't created equal; some provide more power than others. Regardless, even under the best of circumstances it won't charge as quickly as with firewire, though transfer speeds are about equal.

Are there any settings to configure in Windows to somehow "activate" charging?

B/c right now, I just plug in my Ipod and it will connect to itunes and I can transfer songs, but it won't charge (ie, no charging symbol on Ipod screen). I don't know if I need to change settings or something?

Depends on your iPod. For example, the iPod Mini only has charge-over-USB, but only the newer ones (gen 2).

So Gen 2 mini ipods can ONLY charge via usb?

My bro has a gen 1 and it charges via Firewire...haven't tried it with usb 2.0.

So does a 3g 15Gb ipod charge via usb 2.0?

you can charge a mini with firewire or usb...i just used the firewire cable that cames with the regular ipods (not mini). its the same cable..im charging it right now.

yeah i know it will charge with Firewire.

I used to just use firewire, but recently the Ipod got fscked up somehow and it doesn't connect to my comp. It will charge but I won't be able to transfer any songs to it. It does connect via USB 2.0 though.
