About what % faster is an Athlon XP @ DIVX ripping than a roughly equivalent Thunderbird?
>>

I dont exactly know the numbers because I went from a 1.4ghz Athlon to a northwood @ 2133 but for 33$ you cant really go wrong,it will run cooler & be faster.

33$ is nothing, that's the price of a 24 pack of bud in Canada.;)

I dont think you will see a huge diff, except when SSE is supported, but for 30 bones it is worth it.how much for my unlocked ayhja 1.4 tbird retail. :D

I think it's a good idea. ~ $30 ain't much for a 1.53GHz Pally, and you can always upgrade to a 2GHz Tbred or Barton assuming the AK31 supports it. :)

For the price difference, do it. Same reasons other's have mentioned, a bit faster and runs cooler.

not necessary at all heck My 1.4 T-bird almost hits 1.7 anyhow...

you will not notice the difference.

Just O/C that 1.4!

anyhow $35 bux for an upgrade you cannot even tell seems silly! Wait till the higher mhz are out. OR get a P4 1.6A and OC the Shiznit out of it.

I went from a Tbird 1.33 gHz\512 meg SDRam to a XP1900+ \ 512 meg DDR with a faster hard drive. The new system is noticeably faster. I suspect the increase in performance is more due to the hard drive and RAM upgrade than the cpu change.

I say go for it. The 1800+ would run cooler, faster (because of the extra mhz and SSE, CPU enhancements) and $30 isn't really much of an upgrade expense ( heck, I just ate at Black Angus and the bill was WAY more than $30:().

The problem is that my T-Bird is a hot mofo...I'd like to get something cooler and run a quieter fan. I'm not planning on getting rid of my motherboard (it kicks too much ass;)) so going to the Pentium 4 is out of the question. I could wait for T-Bred, but those won't be out til June.

That 1.4ghz T-bird IS one hot mofo. In one of my rigs, I replaced a 1.2ghz T-bird with an XP 1600+ (1.4ghz) and its cooler than the 1.2 T-bird. I was able to replace the Delta fan with a much more civilized Sunon 80mm fan on my Swiftech MC462 and temps remained reasonable. The 1800+ is $105 over at Newegg right now, it won't go much lower than that in the future so IMO, now is a good time to upgrade.

I'd say that $30 for a faster, cooler CPU is well worth it. Then again, a 1.4 T-Bird is hardly slow, and the Thoroughbreds (which will be even cooler), aren't that far off. But I would definitely upgrade to either an XP or a TBred.

From a gaming perspective, my xp 1800+ @1701 runs w/ a geforce 2 gts runs morrowind a whole lot faster than my friends 1.4 tbird w/ a geforce3 ti 200.

Well, I went ahead and ordered a Retail 1800+ for $111 from NewEgg. I can use the quieter stock fan and ditch my SK6 with the T-Bird.

When you get it installed, update the thread with your opinion of the CPU. I am interested. :)

The stock fan that came with my 1600+ wasn't all that quiet, just a heads up. I replaced mine with an Alpha PAL8045 + Panaflo L1A :D

Hey NFS4: You already have a great system, and even though you'd be spending only ~30 bucks, at least to me it seems like a wiser choice to wait a month or two for the throughbred. That way you will have a cooler running chip that will probably overclock VERY well with your SK6. :)

Just my $0.02

1) I'm not going to pay a price premium for the Thoroughbred
2) Besides the die shrink, the Thoroughbred offers NO benefits over the Palomino core. So even if I were to pick up low-end T-Bred for about the price of an 1800+, the only tangible benefit would be a little bit lower operating temperature.

I just did it,
well not exactly...
I am replacing my KT 133A setup with SDRAM and 1.2 T-bird with K266A, DDR RAM, and XP 1800...
how much faster (in terms of percent) my new setup would be when compared to the "old" one...?
Go for it, for $30.00 it is a solid upgrade

<< Any speed difference dude?? >>

I haven't been really paying attention. I'm quite sure that it is faster, but I haven't run any benches yet. I was more interesting in a cooler running chip and quieter fan. Besides, I ended up getting $100 for my Thunderbird + SK6 so it was only $18 out of my pocket. Can't complain :D
