Then I started to wonder if I had eaten the apple while it was still attached to the tree would I be eating a living creature. Then I wondered how long after it had been picked would it remain alive, and, what the cells in things like lettuice look like, since, at one time they were once living plant cells.

no, you're not eating a "creature" because the term as we know it, refers to animals. it was "alive" though, just like anything else that we eat (unless you eat rocks or something).

Well, that's the phallacy of veganism, isn't it? there's absolutely no way to eat something wasn't, at one time, alive. Unless you eat only elements and manmade chemicals. But vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc. are all, to one extent or another, living things.

well, much of the point to veganism is that the market for animals and their byproducts has resulted in the mistreatment of some animals. you can mistreat an apple, but it's not going to feel it like an animal would.

hopefully one day we will discover that they can feel.

that would be interesting to say the least. but i doubt it, since they have no nervous system (well, at least that we're aware of at least).

Incorrect, the parts of your nails and hair that you cut are already dead.

The ripening process is basically a gradual rotting.
So I'd say it's not alive as soon as it's picked.

But the real question is when does the seed become a tree?
