Is AMD finished?

After 7 years of only running AMD cpu's I just bought an Intel Core 2 e6750.
Wow. What a cpu!
Has AMD fallen so far behind they are in danger of folding?
Intel not only has far better chips, but their manufacturing techniques give far greater yields meaning it costs much less to make them.
With Intel at 45 nm and already sampling 32 nm, AMD is still having trouble doing 65 nm.
The only reason I can see AMD surviving is if Intel were to keep them in business to avoid antitrust issues. If Intel wanted, it seems, they could just blow AMD out of the water on both price and performance.

AMD had been around for years before the Athlon processor gave them a relatively household name. I doubt that they will go out of business, but there is certainly a decent likelihood that they will fade into obscurity again.

I'm still buying AMD and will for my next as well. I don't think that price/performance goes to AMD, especially with their recent price cuts.

For gaming, the CPU is kind of second on the list now with the power of the Video Card. I'd rather save some money on the CPU and put it towards the bad-ass Video.

When I built my new computer about a year ago I fully intended to use an AMD chip. But I waited so long the Core 2 chips came out. After reading the reviews & benchmarks I went with a E6600 Intel chip. Very good decision I must say.

AMD knows how to run lean to survive their current situation. I'd expect them to become competitive again probably sometime in 2009. If the ATI 3800 series turns out to be a good value they'll at least have that.

One thing is for sure. Dell finally started selling AMD processors this year. I thought that would never happen. For many business folks, they don't care what processor they get, as long as it's newer than the system they got 2 years ago. I don't see AMD going under because they're selling too many processors.

They will continue to attempt to out-engineer Intel and I doubt that will happen unless Intel puts too much stock in a technology that flops. It could happen, but AMD would have to match their failure with success to get any recognition. I see them as being second for a very long time.

This is currently true....and because of this I bought my very first Nvida card (8800gts).

Processor-wise, I still like AMD...although I'm looking for a review/comparison of the Intel E6550. Currently $130, but I can't find a review to see how it stacks up to AMD.

I was always a huge AMD fan, every PC I've owned in quite some time has been AMD (K6-2, Athlon, Athlon XP, Athlon 64), but my next one will probably be Intel. For a long time, Intel had the brand recognition, but in many performance tests AMD was king (or in the case of the K6, it was a lot cheaper). Now? Not so much...its a shame.

Maybe AMD will drop building new fabs in the future and switch to TSMC, IBM, or another foundry. Then they can invest the savings in processor design. I don't think they have the means to maintain their own fabs as the cost is simply ballooning with every process shrink.

Well, I found my E6550 comparison on a pretty cool site called Anandtech.

So...I think I might be going Intel with my next build. The 2.33ghz E6550 beats the 2.6ghz 5000+ (by 40fps in UT3) and they are both the same price.

AMD's problems are their own fault. They had a huge lead with the Athlon 64 but they sat on their ass for to fucking long. Aren't they just now starting to roll out some marginally better stuff based on new tech? I don't really know I guess, I stopped paying attention! When you get the lead, you keep running like the other guy is right up your ass. You don't stop for a water break.

Well, in this area I disagree. It was MS that that couldn't get WinXP 64 out the door and when they did they buried it with poor support.
Leaving the only reason to buy an AMD x64 if you had huge bucks and wanted a huge amount of memory.

The worst part is this is terrible for the consumer. Even if you're a fan of either manufacturer, the lack of competition only makes things cost more. Just like at Nvidia's 8800 series. They had same top-end card out for a year, and barely dropped the price because AMD couldn't pump out a competitive product. If AMD flounders, we can only expect more of the same from Intel/Nvidia in the coming years.
