is AM3+ the official Bulldozer socket?

sorry if that is a silly question but is it? the reason I ask is that Bulldozer is not even out for a few more months and that is the only socket I have heard will support it. I did not know if AM3+ was just some in between socket so people can transition over to Bulldozer and another socket would be released later.

thanks and I feel silly for asking but I have not really kept up too much with AMD. so I guess it would not be too crazy to build an AM3+ pc with a $120 Phenom 2 X4 and then go Bulldozer later. I am just about worried that Bulldozer could be a disappointment.

I suppose you can say AM3+ is the official socket for BD.
AM3+ socket lifespan is unknown, since there is another socket that is required for the chips after BD.

And BD will be the last CPU for AM3+ apparently. After that AMD is transitioning to FMx (and the x seems to be a placeholder so FM1, FM2) which should support both APU and BD successor.

Although it has been suggested that FMx for Komodo could be a typo.

Im seeing some action on AMD side. With Intel you dont know anymore since they delay and delay.

Ivory used to be late 2011 ? We might not even get Sandy E chips any time soon.

thx gb

you do know Bulldozer was originally supposed to be out a long time ago. Sandy Bridge E was supposed to be around Q4 anyway so its not much delayed. and most people kept confusing Sandy Bridge E with Ivy Bridge which was always planned for 2012 from I have seen.

This is why im pissed at AMD for backing out of there statements that BD would be AM3 compatable. What the hell is the point of making yet another new socket just for one CPU, as the following BD updates will be on FMx. Why not just have launch BD run on AM3 like originally planned then move to FMx, putting AM3+ in the middle for a single CPU launch seems like a cash grab to sell more mobo/chipsets.

This is why I just went to an ASrock Z68 Extreme4/Intel2500k combo. Not only tired of waiting but tired of the MB possibilities. Intel changes also. However, the Z68 chipset will see me through.

yeah intel isnt any better for platforms, although 775 lasted forever. But at least with intel you know where you stand, there roadmaps are accurate and they usually dont leave you in limbo not know whats going on like AMD seems to be lately.

Don't spend $120 for a PhII quad. Just this one for $94.99 using coupon code: EMCYTZT578

If you don't care about the L3 cache and hsf then you might still be able to get a oem Athlon II x4 for $7x shipped. :)

You know most 870/880/890 AMD mobo are going to support BD with a bios upgrade, right? It's dependent on the manufacturer's getting the BIOS's written, tested and released.

I wonder what we'll have to give up for that to work, though. Will TurboCORE 2.0 work properly in an AM3 socket? And will these newer BD CPUs start blowing up mobos like Thuban did (even though the mobo had official support)?

I'd much rather just buy an AM3+ motherboard now and be done with it. They can be had for less than $80 if you're lucky enough to be close to a Microcenter, though I am hoping BD is worth it to get a nice motherboard...

You might have a point, but by looking at the AMD 9X0 chipset specifications (which was build specifically for BD), they aren't that dissimilar from the AMD 8X0 chipsets. The 9X0 adds a few USB 3.0, removes all IDE support, faster and more (up to 32Gb) DDR3 memory support and not much else.
