FOr those who haven't seen it.

It's a russian music download site. They claim to be in accordance with all Russian copyright laws. Is it legal to buy music from them? It is legal to buy music from them while living in the US? Anyone know?

That's not true. The site is illegal. I mean, the copyright law is exactly the same and they don't get licensed by recording companies who retain the rights for those recordings. I don't see how it's possible that site is legal.

I've done it and no feds knocking down my door. I'd probably stop using it if some official body decides it's not legal... but until then...

I have decided it's not legal.
Cease and desist immediately.
Thanks.

Nothing has shown it illegal through official documents or at least a news article, so basically, as of until something proves it illegal, it's perfectly legal, now whether you think it's morally right or not is a different story.

Not if you are a Russian citizen and out of the RIAA reach

do you think we may have a war over intellectual property eventually?

I don't need any proof actually. I'm tired of seeing Windows sold at every corner for $2 (all illegal stuff). Actually, it's absolutely impossible to buy any legal media in Russia. That's why I never buy any media (not a DVD or anything else). And of course don't d/l from that funky site.

This is from their site:

All the materials in the MediaServices projects are available for distribution through Internet according to license # LS-3Ì-03-79 of the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society. Under the license terms, MediaServices pays license fees for all the materials subject to the Law of the Russian Federation "On Copyright and Related Rights". All the materials are available solely for personal use and must not be used for further distribution, resale or broadcasting.

You can't dispute that they say their service is legal. Whether or not it is legal is another matter...

has nothing to do with recording companies and performers who have exclusive rights for their works.

Copyright law is not international. I don't know what protections artists get under Russian copyright law, but allofmp3.com CLAIMS they are following Russian copyright laws. If they are, it is legal under U.S. copyright law to re-import the music.

Maybe the US law is different (I think so), but in Russia claims are worthless. You have to provide a paper with many stamps and signatures of officials proving every claim. You can claim whatever you want, and many people do. Whether they posess the actual right is a different question.

If Russia went against the RIAA, I'd be saying Das Vadanya and waving a Russian flag

there's plenty of threads on this in both OT and HD, everything has been rehashed ten times over already.

EDIT: actually it looks like the mods deleted the original huge thread in HD. i guess that tells you their stance on the matter.

I asked my uncle, whos a lawyer, and he says that because the servers are based in Russia and because they seem to own the copyright, the RIAA wouldn't have a valid case against you even if you were caught.
