Is AGP dead?

Do you think us AGP users will get a version of the next cycle of graphics cards. It seems like everyone is switching over pretty quickly.

No one is switching. NO ONE. AMD does not have a single board out that supports it. Plus, the Intel options that do feature PCI-E carry a huge price premium. AGP is still where it's at. It will definitely see the next generation of graphics cards.

I don't think PCI-E will take off until we get affordable SLI solutions. That's atleast 6-8 months down the line.

PCI-E is all hype probably at least until mid next year. AGP cards are not going anywhere. There will be AGP revs of the next two generations of vid cards without a doubt. AGP is where it's at for the forseeable future unless you're looking to SLI.

It seems like everyone is going PCI-E because it is the new thing in town, so it is getting a lot of press lately.

New AGP cards will be around for a while, I would guess.

I'm seeing some PC companies use PCI-Express as a marketing sheme. I don't care what kind of slot it's in...a crappy card will still be a crappy card in a PCI-EXpress slot. I saw some couple who wanted a good PC for gaming buy a Sony PC with an X300 at circuit city. ..Those salesmen will really take advantage whenever possible.

still has a few more years left, i dont think that it is that hard to bridge the AGP/PCI-E cards back and forth, plus, i dont think we are anywhere near saturation the AGP 8X bus, as long as many people have it, there will be a a AGP solution avaialbe from ATI/nVIdia.

yeah, agp is going to be around for awhile. the bandwidth is not even close to being used at full capacity, even with today's biggest baddest cards.

I remember that PCI video cards died pretty quick when AGP was first introduced. Yeah, it will take a year or so but not much longer. There will still be AGP cards produced for many years but they will only be value solutions.

I highly doubt We will see an AGP version of an R500 or NV50 board. By the end of the year almost every motherboard in the PC builder market will have PCI-e AMD included. Since very few companies plan on trying to do AGP and PCI-e boards, the switchover is going to be more rapid then the PCI->AGP switch. Expect the current generation to be the last peformance AGP cards.

I disagree. So far we were supposed to have a fast transition to PCI-E and now you barely have it entering the market, and on top of it mobo makers are going to try AGP/PCIE slot.

On top of it... if for some HYPOTHETICAL reason what you predict comes true, you will still have 80% of the pcs out there running with AGP slots. Pity the card maker that doesn't support AGP for the next two years.

nahhh... they just want you to fork over some money to buy a card that does the same thing but comes with a diff connector... tell them to go jump and stick with AGP.

There will be on one more generation of AGP cards...the 7th generation Geforce cards from Nvidia will most likely be the last AGP performance cards. If you assume that those cards are about 6-12 months away (more likely 12)...AGP will last another 18-24 months.

But you will see both this generation and the next generation in PCI-E.

We're more likely to see a death from AGP based on what motherboard manufacturers ship rather than based on what GPU manufacturers ship.

There are still PCI graphics cards out.
AGP will be around, but will be relegated to little support, as most motherboards will be PCI-E or AGP only, I doubt there will be a huge number of boards with both AGP and PCI-E slots on.
Most newer shipments of motherboards in 2005 will probably be PCI-E, that'll be the year of change, and PCI-E graphics cards will slowly overtake AGP sales, probably by the end of 2005 at the latest, but it will be a good 18 months before the transition is really made.

I think even Intel is coming out with a new chipset that will have AGP only support. I think it depends how often you plan on replacing your video card and your motherboard.

I dont like to be an early implementer. It makes me feel like a Guini Pig or something. I know some people just have pots of money and want the first edition or version of everything, but I like to let someone else be the beta-tester. You dont know what is wrong with a product without a little history of use. As soon as people start using it, you will see if it works or not. Besides the newer Intel PCI-Express motherboards are almost $200.00.

People are already finding bugs in the Service Pack 2 of WinXP, but if you want to download it go ahead. I think if you wait prices will drop a little in 6 months. Sometimes things go on sale around christmas time. Ya gotta love Santa Clause!

My next mothboard is going to be PCI express that's for sure. I want SLI.

And Nvidia and ATI both have a lot of PCI express cards coming out.

i don't know about AGP dying as fast as some of yall think. it's still a good technology, and like mago said, around 80+% of the market stilll uses AGP, thus showing there is still a really large market for AGP cards. Hell, 3dfx offered PCI versions of their voodoo4/5's even after AGP was well long after established as the dominant expantion port for graphics adapters and those were by no means "bargain" cards. Then again, 3dfx hasn't been known for their great marketing strategies either .
