Is ACPI worth the trouble??

In my brand new A7V Asus V7100 setup and my old BX Celery 400 rig all problems were fixed when I disabled ACPI. Does ACPI work for anybody outhere?? It just seems to cause more problems than anything else.

Similar experience here. I reinstalled Win2k in standard PC mode a few weeks ago after having run ACPI for about six months. Performance and stability have improved dramatically for me, but I wouldn't bet it's always the case. If you do a search on "ACPI" in the OS forum, you'll turn up several relevant discussions. In my humble opinion, I don't think ACPI is the best choice for someone capable of allocating resources manually. In other words, if you can set up IRQ's for your devices in the motherboard's BIOS, stick with a standard PC HAL. For those who prefer a set-it-and-forget-it system, install ACPI and hope for the best. From reading several threads on the subject, if there are any problems, the sound card is the most common.

For starters, check out here, here, and here.

Best regards,
Floyd

WTF is ACPI?
I thought it was some kind of power management?
How do you choose between a Standard PC HAL and an ACPI HAL anyways? I installed Win2k today and I was looking for that but I didn't see it am I just blind?

Noriaki:

Go to System Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager.

Under "Computer" double click whatever is there. Then go to Driver and hit Update Driver, choosing "Display a list..." and choose whatever you need.

I don't know what the difference between the two is, if someone could enlighten me on the difference that'd be great too. :)

ACPI is a power management and resource allocater for your system. (Hope that is an acurate description) One of the things it does is allow more than one device to use the same irq. To disable it in Windows 2000 do the following.

Disable P&P OS and ACPI in your BIOS, if you can (you may not be able to, and it is not always necessary) - if the option is not available try installing the latest BIOS update for your motherboard. You can get help with finding out what BIOS you need and instructions as to how to flash it at Wim's BIOS page

Reboot. Go to Control Panel - Hardware and double click on My Computer in the hardware manager.

You'll see ACPI - get into its properties and click to install another driver. When prompted, look under the Microsoft section and install the "Standard PC" driver.

Reboot. At this point Win2k will try and reinstall all devices on your system so install any drivers you are prompted for (have them all handy) and reboot. Finalise any drivers you may be prompted for on the 2nd boot and reboot again.

With all your drivers re-installed, take a look in hardware manager - and every device should have its own IRQ.

Be warned that this method is discouraged by Microsoft - see the note at the bottom of this http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q234/5/58.ASP article.

Yes ACPI is horrid. It also lowers performance significantly for games.

it wasn't a performance issue w/ me... my NIC wouldn't work right.. icould use it to surf the net, but as soon as i did file transfers... bam.. lock up. Disabling ACPI was the key.

It actually made my system quite more stable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but its not in Windows 98, right?

Having ACPI in used for quite some months in W98 and W2K, ROCK SOLID.

I know this means nothing, but ACPI is working greatly on me (without it u'll have to press the power button to shut down in w2k!) and the virtual IRQ sharing doesn't slow down my lightening faster PC. I tried remove ACPI before but this did nothing to improve performance/stablity.

My $0.05 is, if it is working, play some games instead!

I find it hard to believe it would slow my comp down noticeably. Everything seems peachy to me.

My comp has been locking up on me recently quite badly. The mouse can still float across the screen but then after a while with each mouse movement my computer internal speaker makes a nasty ticking noise. Should I to disable ACPI?

First change system speed setting to normal instead of optimal in your bios. If your system stil gets smacked down turn of ACPI.
