I'm a long term commitment for dial up here, and was wondering if it were worth it to get one of these?

GoldenBear - You're getting an upgrade basically w/ the v.92 modem, and if you're in the dial-up market and plan on being there for a while, then you should go ahead and go for it... if it's cheap to you ya to make the upgrade. You won't be confined to the 53K regulation by the government which will give you a faster upload/download, I dunno one or the other, or both (not too sure).

Some pricewatch prices

HERE

Pretty good deals running.. if you have around 50-60 bucks to spare... go for it.
The one that clearly stands out of the pack would be the 3Com there... USR makes some quality modems... shell out the extra cash for the better product, support, long-run ;)

Good Luck

Also make sure your ISP uses V.92 spec. Won't do you anygood if they don't comply with V.92 ;)

Several brands of the V.90 modem are upgradable to V.92 with a download.

Lucent and USR are a couple. Check your manufacturer's site or Google search V.90 V.92.

V.92 should work with a V.90 ISP.

v.90 is 53/36, v92 is 56/56 which will especially help gaming as well.

I've also read that upgraded modems don't work as well one bought as v92. I don't know though.

I imagine the difference between a v.90 winmodem and a v.92 winmodem would be:
1. drivers
2. stickers on it ;)

I would think 90% of winmodems and maybe 70% of v.90 hardware modems would work as well as "real" v.92 modems...
