Is a swollen lymph node something to get checked on?

I've got what I think is a swollen lymph node on the side of my neck slightly towards the back and about an inch above my collar bone (inferior deep cervical glands?) It's hard as a rock about two pea sizes. Coincidently, I've got a dermatology appointment soon, which I know isn't the right guy to go to, but I figure he'll tell me if I need to get it checked out for real.

A lot of people have swollen lymph nodes - typically, it becomes more worrisome if it's tender. You can definitely ask the dermatologist about it. It's something they should know about as a doctor. I doubt it's anything to worry about.

My girlfriend has been freaking out about something similar. I keep telling her she's fine...she insisted on going to the doctor and, of course, they just threw some pills at her and told her to come back. They are also doing some blood tests (lol).

If the node is really "hard as a rock", you gotta see someone fast. Tender lymph nodes usually signify infection. Hard lymph nodes are worrisome for malignancy. Two pea sizes, is that about 1.5 cm?

I think it's about 1 cm in diameter, maybe upwards of 1.25 kind of hard to get an accurate measure. I'm not going to let it bother me too much for now. I already have a dermatology appointment monday, and I have an ENT appointment tuesday. Dentist I saw today said ENT was the person to go to to have it checked out. I'll mention it to both of them see what they say; I was trying to figure out if I should make an appointment with my primary asap, but since the ENT is the guy to see that doesn't seem important now.

this.

typically, it's nothing you should be worried about... especially during allergy season.

I saw an ENT today. He actually found more of them than I noticed, but said they were probably scar tissue from childhood illness or something like that. As long as they don't get bigger he said there's probably nothing to worry about.
