Is a ring shaped motherboard possible?

Would a ring shaped motherboard work? For example if you took the chipset of a standard cd-rw drive and rearranged it into a ring shape on a disc shaped motherboard with a hole in the center would if function properly. Or would the shape cause inefficiencies in data movement or other problems?

Sure...you could make a motherboard any shape...

Might add tot he cost...but it could be any shape...

Assuming you have massive amounts of money for a custom mobo, move this to highly technical.

I can't see how this wouldn't cause HUGE memory and wiring inefficiencies. Remember that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and a ring-shaped mobo would force EVERY SINGLE IC to run in a long circle to get to its destination.

Old Seagate Barracuda SCSI hard drives have a pretty complicated circuit board and they are bent around 90 degree corners. Seemingly you could make it look like a "Ruffles" potato chip or a Mobius strip if you had the money.

From the point of view of an electron, they don't much care which way they have to go...

A ring-shaped motherboard? That'd be cool to propose to a fellow female geek with...

disc wasnt' the best word, cause of the CD-RW drive conotation. I think they meant a flat ring shape.

And, yea, it can be done, so long as you're talking a flat shape. It'd be a little more expensive, mostly due to a slight increase in design costs, wasted circuit board (it'd have to be done to a square or rectangle, to accomodate the SMT machinary and such), and the added step of removing the extra peices.

You aren't planning on stealing this guys invention, are you?? That's just dastardly of you! ;)
