Is a resume submitted without a cover letter even considered?

Debating on whether or not to write a cover letter for a job that I'm applying for online.

Should I take the time to write one out? And if so, who do you direct it at when there's no specific contact information?

Thanks! 🙂

I think it does increase your chances if you have a cover letter that's tailored to that specific position. At the same time they will not reject you just for not having a cover letter ...

You ring up the personnel dept, and ask who is in charge of recruitment for that job. Address the letter to them by name.

It doesn't have to be long if your resume/CV is sufficiently detailed and clearly and specifically indicates why you want that particular job. If that's the case then a quick, "Dear Ms Doe, I submit my application for Flange Grobble fitter with Widgets, Inc. I enclose my resume for your kind consderation. Yours sincerely" may be sufficient. Generally though, you should write a brief paragraph to explain why you want the job, and why you want to work for Widgets, Inc.

A number of jobs I've applied for have just wanted anonymized application forms. If that's the case then don't send a letter with them.

Some only want the resume, others want a cover letter also, and still some more EXPECT a cover letter. I usually don't attach a cover letter, but if this is a job you really want, take the extra time out. Search online for many different examples of how to write one out, find one that fits you and the job you are applying for and try it out. Good Luck with your job search!!! 😀

It came up in a search for Desktop Support on hotjobs, and I can't even find a website for the company! 😕

Still submitted my resume though, so we'll see...

I've hired people in the past...and I'd expect a cover letter. If you don't know who to address it to, try, "Dear Sir or Madam" That's the generally accepted method of addressing cover letters to people you don't know.

depends on the request, if in doubt submit one. Many (esp IT jobs) just say submit resume only. They are usually looking for certs that they can bring on for their own purposes (if dealing in enough volume the savings the 'premier' partners get can outweigh a few mid 5 figure salaries).

I usually avoid the impersonal companies....chances are they will be a ball and chain type job.
