Am I the only one that encodes for other reasons than "backing up" DVD movies?

My main encoding application is to make DVD disks from my DV camcorder movies. I also encode to WMV (small fie size) to email short clips to family members.

Thats EXACTLY what I did for years ! Including making the DVD for my sons school. I now backup my DVDs since my son continues to loose them....arg.. Anyway, I also don;t know what the big encoding deal is. The few times I use it for big projects, I encode overnight, so I really don;t care since I am asleep when it finishes.

OK, got the results for the P4 2.8c now.

P4 2.8c HT stock speed
768MB RAM
Unknown Gateway mobo
DVD: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4040B (Don't know the brand or specs, possibly Hitachi)
60GB 7200 rpm WD HD
WinXP SP1
DVD Shrink 3.1.7

Movie: Gone in 60 Seconds
Automatic compression to fit on single DVD
Initial analysis: 1 min 50 sec.
Deep analysis: 20 min 1 sec. (2300kB/s, 96 fps @ start. 5779kB/s, 218.4 fps @ end)
Encoding: 20 mins 3 sec.
Total time: 41 min 54 sec.

Compared to the Barton XP2500+:
Initial analysis: 1 min 52 sec
Deep analysis: 29 min 46 sec.
Encoding: 38 min 7 sec.
Total time: 69 mins 45 sec.

That is ~30 mins faster on the P4 folks. The Barton got pwned.
Maybe part of this is due to different DVD readers but if you look at the encoding, the P4 is almost 100% faster. :Q

This is consistent with my previous tests.

i know my barton is clocked a little faster than yours, but i tell ya it'll encode in half the time your barton takes. I was encoding gladiator last night and it ended at 7200 kb/sec encoding..

I did not rip the movie with DVD Decrypter first so I guess it still reads from the DVD while encoding then.
Is that correct?

yes that's correct.. i don't rip it and then encode.. it rips and encodes at the same time. I think it might have to do with what dvd reader you have. I've used a few dvd drives in the past and liteOn dvd readers are the fastest in my opinion.

How do you even do that ?? The open disk only gives the DVD drives in my porgram version when you "open disk"

agreed.. you'll be testing your hard drive speed instead of dvd rom speed if you rip it first then encode. It should give a better comparision though. If anyone with a p4 wants to bench with this new method, then im up to it.. have gladiator, ID4, matrix, maxtrix revolutions, momento, T2, and a few other dvds. let me know

That would be correct but how do they really test this then? When I read CPU tests here on AT they do encoding (and so far the P4 has been > AXP).

I'm sure they just encode a video file that is on a HDD. Not that hard really
