skip the laptop for the first semester and then you can gauge if you really need it. i don't think the reasons you gave are quite strong enough.

the only time I use my laptop is when I'm studying in coffee shops and need to 'collaborate' with my friends who are elsewhere.

Don't colleges offer laptops? My cousin's and my friend's brother's college(Bentley) offers free wireless internet.

If anything get a digital voice recorder that has software to transcribe the lecture into text documents. That'd be more useful then a laptop.

A tape recorder is way better IMHO. I had one and I basically hit record and fell asleep. At the end of the class, I'd have everything the instructor talked about without missing a beat and just study off the books and ocassionally listen to the recordings. A++ student here iight.

its not necessary

you will just surf the net and chat with your friends, and thats even if you take the effort to bring your computer, and thats assuming you can motivate yourself to even attend class

nowadays lots of profs put all the notes online or make available a note packet, so at most you would just annotate these

how efficient is taking notes going to be in math class? i dont know what your major is... i suppose if it is history or something with lots of rambling lectures and not many symbols or computations typing could work.

and from firsthand experience, none of the people i knew with laptops EVER took it to class

dont try to scam your parents, the real reason you want it is bc it is an awesome toy :)

when i am in the university
The only times when laptop is needed are when I
1) need to do a presentation with powerpoint
2) bring my laptop for programming test

Actually, its not very necessary as desktop computer is alway provided by school if needed
or
just one student bring a laptop is good enough for the whole class to do powerpoint presentation

And yes, you have to think about security problem, you will lose your precious laptop if someone steal it

Some of you have said that a laptop would be good if you'll be doing a lot of traveling. I will indeed be doing much traveling. What would be handy then?

Unless your college classes actually ask that you bring your laptop to class (for example, the Med program at Duke has their students lugging around a laptop to most lectures), you won't get much more use out of a laptop than a desktop.

Why not do this:

Go to school for a month. If you need it, tell your parents to get you one. If you don't feel you need it, there you go. The Dell hot deal fell around that time as well....

Quit trying to come up with ANY reason to get one. You don't need it. Tell your parents to save that $$ for when you need help with your bills & rent. Trust me.

No

Unfortunately my mom (who doesn't know how to drive a stick) wouldn't let me get a manual trans. My dad and I were all for it though :p It does have a kick@$$ system in it(courtesy of my bank account) and I am planning on upgrades ;)
