Is a ATI 8500 the card to get for the buck? Or should I get a Geforce3?

<< Can you fill me in on how/where you can get a Radeon 8500 for $166??? >>

check price watch. there are alot places selling around the $165-$175 price range

I would definitely go with a Radeon 8500 or 8500LE on the price/performance ratio. I heard they are going release a new card (128MB version of 8500) that will also trigger a price reduction in the other cards.

The OEM card is $166, the retail is $199. But the OEM is clocked a lot slower from what I have heard, possibly 145/145 vs the retail 175/175.

Im getting the retail any day now from a local pc store for $200+ I will then amex price match the card within 60 days of the cheapest place I can find it online. So I think after the next Nvidia and ATI cards come out that Ill be paying around $140 or so.

DON'T GET IT!!!!!! The Radeon8500 LE is schedueled to drop down to 150$ (Which equates to 130-150$ online). It's in a week. Wait a week and a half and you'll see a price drop.

<< I have a Gainward GF3 Ti200 and Counter Strike doesn't look great.. it gives me texture problems and such. Yes my card is overclocked but only at 220/500. It can perform stable right up at 250/560. BUT, I get the same crap in CS when it's at default speed. I haven't seen the 8500 in CS but if it's anything like the Radeon 32 DDR that I have in my other system, then it'd look better than the GF3. >>

Sounds like a driver conflict. My Gainward GF3 Ti500 looks beautiful in Halflife, CS and TFC at 1280x960 with AA on full, or off.

yeah, i suggest you wait for the Geforce4 to come out. without a doubt, it'll cause both the Geforce 3 and the Radeon 8500 to go down in price. But for the time being, i think a $160 radeon 8500LE is the best bang for the buck. A quick bios update and a pencil trick, and you got yourself a retail 8500! If you need the software package, PM me, and the pencil trick can be found at the forums of www.rage3d.com

cheers!

It was my understanding that the OEM and LE came with slower memory. It is not just clocked slower than the retail, it is different (slower) memory modules. If that is the case, how can a pencil trick and a BIOS update bring it up to par with the retail???

OEMs usually have the same memory, while LEs have a slower memory, but its possible to get both up to retail speeds.
