is a 4890 for $175 a good buy these days?

I see lots of funny stuff on here. Is everybody poor? I mean if it were $20 overpriced it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I drink $20 worth of pop a week for crying out loud 😛

Basic comprehension problems or just linguistically challenged?

WTF being poor has to do with judging something overpriced?

Plenty of people have the money, they just refuse to be ripped off.

Ripped off? It's supply and demand. If you paid attention in 3rd grade you would learn that as the demand goes up or the supply goes down, the price increases. How can that be considered getting ripped off? Same with the 5850 and 5870.

I was being facetious oh super-wise one. Grammatically it would have been better for you to have replied "WTF does being poor have to do with judging something as being overpriced?". When you can form a more coherent sentence then start to lecture me on linguistics and comprehension 😛

You lose.

Yes, ripped off. Stop thinking it was only a $20 markup when it was over $100 on some sites for the cards. There is a difference between about a 7% markup compared to a 35% markup for the 5850. Many would classify that as a ripoff. When the prices started getting out of control ATI increased their MSRP.

I can afford it but I won't rip myself off paying over-inflated prices.

You do realize I was poking fun up there in that post, you and others must have missed the "Sticking-my-tongue-out smily.
I was referring to the original question about $175 being a reasonable price for a 4890. I think it is, obviously cheaper through rebates or coupon codes is always better. In the price range, I don't think you can find anything better. It really comes down to when you are ready to buy, do you spend a bit extra and enjoy the equipment, or keep waiting. I don't think the 48xx cards will decrease in price as the supply dwindles.

I don't know, the cheaper 4890s (...PowerColor) and 4870s (...XFX) I've seen have these horrible coolers on them (presumably, this is how they cut costs). I just ended up paying a little more for 4870s (HIS ones) that have a proper cooler that exhausts air out the back of the case.

Ouch. After posting few incoherent, idiotic posts then claiming 'facetious' (yeah, my @ss) etc it's rather funny to see you sweating at some lame attempt to patronize someone else...

...speaking of 'grammatically' (sic!): "Grammatically it would have been better" - better? Ouch...

...and I'm not even a native speaker, kido. 😛

You lose.

Considering nobody understood your last few uh-oh-soooo-facetious (BS) comments...

...it wasn't me who just had to explain himself repeatedly...

...who's the loser, what do you think? :awe:

Let it go - you're trying to argue with someone who's proudly voicing his arguments he learned "in 3rd grade (...) that as the demand goes up or the supply goes down, the price increases"... 😀

...one word: priceless. 😀

Alright, I had some nice things to say to you, but I changed the post 😛 I don't want to get into an argument with an obvious child. Rule number one when dealing with children, don't argue with them or you'll bring yourself down to their level. I was obviously being light-hearted and making a smart aleck remark in my original post, you, and one other took it the wrong way. I think your being horribly argumentative for some apparent reason, but whatever. It's not a bad post that I have to justify or explain to you, certainly no cause for backpedaling or apologies on my part.
I see in your signature you are advertising a 4850X2 video card. Radeon 5850 performance with twice the memory? Are you mad or just trying to deceive people. Sure it has twice the memory, but effectively they both use 1024mb. That's poor advertising on here for people who obviously know better!

Thats very very right, and you can try add some little funds to get your card 🙂

Hey so I am building a new i5 rig and wante to get a new video card for good performance in gaming (i am not going to be doing crazy high resolutions or overclocking)

150-200 is about what i want to spend on a card... sounds like the 4890 the best choice in that range these days.... right?

the 4890 is the best performing card in that bracket today... and the xfx is a couple bucks cheaper at newegg today with code in their ad... i picked up another one last night because ne had a $25 coupon if you spent $250 (the deal with the corsair ddr3 1600 is pretty good, but you can't use it with a coupon)...
