is a 256mb ram upgrade going to be worth $160+?

Damn this gaming hobby...

I play a lot of BF2, and have considered upgrading from 768mb of ram to 1gb (going from 128x2 + 256x2 to 256x4) to help with stuttering issues. The problem is that I have a RDRAM mobo (Dell) so it won't be cheap to upgrade. And the cost of 512 sticks make those a non-option.

So I'll be removing two 128mb sticks and replacing them with two 256mb sticks.

I really do not want to rebuild (new mobo with cheaper memory, etc).

So, my question is this: will that 256mb increase be worth a cost of $160 or so? I can't find any memory level comparisons online that would give me some evidence one way or another.

You'd be much better off just waiting until you can get something better.

That's option #2. But with the mrs. in law school, that may not be for a while. So this could be my only option in the short term.

Plus, I just bought a 6600gt agp this spring. So I don't want to upgrade to PCIe mobo yet (and the combo agp+pcie boards seem to have some issues, from reviews I read).

Last week I checked my memory usage with BF2, and it wasn't hitting over 900mb (game plus system). So I thought this slight upgrade might help.

Have you priced what your RDRAM would sell for on eBay?

You could do an upgrade to socket 754 / AGP / decently fast Sempron fairly cheaply.

It looks like about $160-180 for the 256 duo, and maybe $100 for the 128 pair. And that surely isn't a bad idea.

But then I get back to the new mobo, new Windows install, etc that I'd like to avoid.

I may just have to bite the bullet and go that route. I could get a mobo that works with this CPU fairly cheaply. I just hate to go through all that for another AGP mobo, which will limit my video card upgrade options.

Sell current system and get a 939, PCIe , 1 gig stick system(get the other stick later)

Or, you could just stop playing BF 2, that's what I chose to do until I get the money for my new build.

Some good deal in the FS/T forums.

I wouldn't do anything. The reality is, an extra 256mb isn't worth $160, unless you feel you would notice 10% better performance or so. Your money would be much better spent on a new system. That being said, if you have cash to burn and you don't want to build a new rig, don't let us stop you (and have fun convicing the wife!)

Cheers

You may look in the FS/FT forum, I am no expert in BF2, but Iwouldnt think the extra ram would help that much. Keep the 160 and save for a upgrade.

Yeah, follow Lasthitlarry's advice and just don't play BF2... There are plenty of other great games out there (Starcraft gogo 😀)

I have ram pulled from my 8250 for sale right now (check my fs thread at bottom of post).

If you sell you 2x 128 sticks on ebay for $100. I can sell you 2x 256 sticks for $150, and it would therefore be a $50 upgrade for an additional 256mb of ram (which would probably cost 25 if you had ddr memory).

Send me a PM if this interests you at all

PS: you might want to enable your acct 😀
