Is a 19" monitor too big for a dorm room?

Depends on your desk. It's probably not too big for your dorm room. Probably a lot easier on your eyes too.

too big? no. big? yes. Don't expect much deskspace with a 19" and a keyboard unless you can move it so that part of the monitor is haning over the edge of the table. In our dorms, the desk was attached to the wall, so it was harder. BUT! It made us go to the library to study, so it could be a good thing.

Probably not, but it depends on the size of your desk. My roommate last year has a 19" monitor and another person I know has a 21" monitor. More than likely, you'll be fine with a 19.

Really depends on the desks, or if you have room to bring your own. My dorm room was so small, I couldn't put in my own desks, and was forced to put my computer on the desks they provided. The desks were only about 20" deep, and that left VERY little room for a bigger monitor. Your face would be like 4" from it. Not cool.

If flat panels had been more cost effective at the time, I would have bought one of those.

Not too big at all, but like was said earlier, depends on the desk. If youve got one of those desks with the overhanging bookshelf, youre going to have to unscrew it and push it back a bit if you dont have a keyboard tray, because otherwise you wont be able to get the kb in front of the monitor.

I do it every year, and they never notice. Just have to put it back.

A flat panel would be nice.. but expensive. :(

If anyone has experiences in the dorms at UC Irvine, then you'll know the desk size and stuff. They come with desks, but I don't remember exactly how big. :(

They do have keyboard trays.. but I never liked using them.

19" monitors can be had for less than $200, you just have to fish around to find good deals. I got a Samsung 950p for $161 shipped from Dell last year via a Hot Deals post. Do you know how much desk space you'll have? They are pretty damn big (deep) and sitting with your face 4" off the screen (as pointed out earlier) would suck.

I've seen lots of deals on 15" lcd's for $150-$175. That 15" LCD will give you the same viewing space as a 17" monitor which is more than sufficient unless you are doing autocad or something else that requires insanely high resolution levels.

a guy i knew in college had his monitor sitting on a sturdy wooden stool so that it wasn't eating all his desk space. another took the hutch off the desk the room came with and then it was fine. but the tiny built into the wall desks were not big enough for a computer and a monitor and studying.

Doesn't seem hard to see for me.. :\

Anyways, if I can get a good 15" LCD for under $200.. I'd probably take that then. :)

Edit: Well.. maybe not. Most LCDs don't seem to have a good resolution? :(

I had a 19" in my Davis dorm room, but it was way to big!
My girlfriend at Irvine however had a desk big enough for a 21".
I think you are safe with a 19" at Irvine, the bigger the monitor the better!

Oh another thing - I just look at big ass monitors as one extra thing to lug around when I move in and out. It sucked carrying a 19" monitor down 4 flights of stairs, and another 300 yards to my car.

Where can you find a good 15" LCD for $150?! This thread had a 15" LCD for $200 + s/h, and it's looking like that was a pricing error (or they just doubled the price after AT effect - too early to know yet).

FYI: I had a 19" in my dorm - like others have said, the key is to angle the back half off the desk, so it's not taking up the entire desk. My roommate and I disassembled our in-rooms desks (they were already missing half the screws anyway!) and built our own, so then I had a little more room for it.

The real downside of 19" is moving the d@mn thing - 40-50lbs and bulky and fragile. It's such a pain moving between dorms or to/from home - it takes up so much space.

Is the Trinitron an FD Trinitron or a standard Trinitron? If it's an FD, go for it. If it's a regular Trinitron, keep looking for good deals on flat Samsung monitors. Flat is just oh-so much better!

Amen to that. A bunch of friends and I have lan parties every so often and most of us have 19" monitors. What a bitch it is to move them around!

It's a KDS AV-195.. It's been discontinued I believe..

It's either that for a 19" or another Samsung 700NF.. :)

let's replace the word monitor with "johnson" and you'll still get the same answer. ;)
