i think its reasonably fast

i just upgraded from the 1.4 tbird to an athlon xp 2100 , i can see improvements in load time i think sse in the xp really helps in a few games and specially divx encoding , u might consider upgrading to an athlon xp, u can sell ur 1.4 tbird and for almost the same price buy an tbred-b 1800 or something

a 1.4ghz is probably average by todays standards. I gamed fine when I had my P3-1ghz w/ GF4 (till December 02 when I got an Atlon XP for xmas).

I'm using a 1.2G Tbird-C and am just now finally seeing games that are barely functional (SimCity 4, C&C Generals). I'm definitely due for an upgrade. I'd call it an average system now overall, below average for gaming. Just fine for home office use, though.

Bottom line, in a nutshell: The answer depends. What do you use your PC for?

Almost identical situation - 1.2Ghz Tualatin Celeron @ 1.5Ghz and a Radeon 8500 . . . I can STILL play all my games - including Unreal II - satisfactorily.

However, I am at the point where I am O/C'ing further (both video card and CPU) to get that bit more detail or FPS . . . what about you have you considered O/C'ing that T-bird for more performance?

My main rig is a 1.4 tbird, my son's gaming rig is a 1.2 tbird and my game server is also a 1.2 tbird.
We've got GeForce 3s and 4s in our rigs and we are playing all the latest and greatest games with all the details tuned to max.
I have not felt the need to upgrade the CPUs yet.

When I do upgrade the CPUs, it will also mean new mobos and memory, don't feel that a mere CPU upgrade is worth it for us.

A T-Bird 1.4 is still fast enough for pretty much anything. It's only worth upgrading if it feels too slow to you.

Upgraded to my T-Bred AXP 1800 december of last year from my old p3 500.
Hadnt done a cpu or mobo upgrade for 2 and a half years. UT2K3 was the first game that wouldnt play on my p3 500 with gf256.

Did I notice a difference after the upgrade? Ill leave that question to your imaginations :p (Of course i bloody did :))
1.4 in my opinion is not slow. The only reason im oc'ing my XP now, is because i want to get as much out of it as i can :)

Dan :)

But will a 1.4 T-bird / GF3 combo fly CFS3 with high detail?
I'm running an MP 1800+ (Palamino) & GF4 4200 combo. CFS3 @ high detail seems to tax my rig. :Q

Yes. 1.4ghz in 2003 is still fast. Ungodly fast for most things.

Unless you're comparing penis size with other gamers. Then you have to boast and run 3Dmark until you have a bigger score.

If you're in this for a business concern like video encoding or graphics work then it's up to you, not your 3Dmark score or your wang, but if you're asking it must be one of those.

Gawd I'm getting tired of the juvenile nature of this board.

I think that what everyone is saying is "It depends on what you're doing".

For DVD editing or heavy graphics, probably not. For games, I'd imagine it would be for all but the latest and greatest. I have an Athlon XP 1800+ (that's 1.533 GHz), and BF1942 runs well, and it's a pretty demanding game.

For everyday (Office, Excel, programming) use, it's still a very good processor.

i have a 1.4GHZ 266FSB with 1 GIG of PC133 CAS 2 memory with a 128 MEG geforce 4 4200. everything i throw at it runs fine game wise including unreal 2. it is more than the CPU that makes up a system, lots of system memory can make up for some of the lack of speed of the CPU to some extent.

LOL, yes, well said.

In another recent thread here, a new member asked what their old 550mhz PIII system might be worth if they tried to sell it and the first response was "It is worth the trip to the trash can."

My response to the new member was that unfortunately you sometimes have to ignore some of the PC snobs around here.
Folks come to a forum like this mainly for info and help. The sarcasm is often not helpful.

Yes I would consider that system fast. I am running a 1.2 TBird and consider my system usable. I agree that the latest games are about the last generation of games that are going to run with any kind of speed on that system.

I always like to upgrade to a system that is 2x as fast as the current system, and if you look at the benchmarks there really are no processors that are 2x as fast as a 1.4 TBird. He would need the equivalent of a 2.8 GHZ Athlon based CPU whiich is not yet currently available. Yes I know there have been enhancements to the Athlon core with the recent generation chips which do not make this a direct comparison, but in any event I would wager that a 3000+ Barton is not twice as fast as a 1.4 TBird. It is only running at 2.167 GHz for gosh sakes. And in many benchmarks the 3.06 P4 too is not 2x as fast. Yes I know that he is running SDR RAM and most of the internet reviews compare these CPUs using DDR RAM.

In any event, the 1.4 TBird is a fast chip, but dropping in a new Palomino or Thoroughbred Athlon (if your board supports it) for $70 couldn't hurt.

Still chugging along on my P3 866 and 512 MBs PC133. I don't game much, listen to music a whole lot, write papers and minor photo editing. It gets by, but i would like it to be a bit more responsive. Just gotta save up for a whole new system.

My wife's PC is a PIII 800 with a GeForce2 GTS and her machine runs practically everything as well as my Athlon XP2100 on Asus A7N8X with Ti4200 (GF4) My rig is faster in 3D games and some disk access activities, but web surfing and creating Word documents they are equal. As has been said in this thread over and over, it depends on what you are doing. You T-bird 1.4 will not be as fast as a P4 3.06 HT when playing UT2003 or encoding DiVX, but they probably will still web surf at the same speed. My .02..

Are you saying it's not as fast as it used to be? that's an angle no one has mentioned. If that's the case, then you've got system problems. It should be as fast as it ever was.
