Like everyone's been saying: If you already have parts, say a bunch of ddr ram, lying around a 939 system MIGHT be a good option, you'd have to make two hypothetical builds and compare. If you're starting from scratch, am2 or 775 all the way

i recently did a new home server in 939 and between trading and buying in the fs/ft section, i got by very good, much better than a am2 setup. and for the duties this rig does, it will probably last me 6-7yrs :) if i was buying new i would go at least am2, but don't now how long the ddr2 will last as ddr3 is already coming out....

939 is still a great performer for 95% of what most people need, but I wouldn't touch it now unless I already had the RAM. I'm stuck with a 939 board because I have 2 gigs of perfectly good RAM that I can't use in the new boards. It took me a long time to get 2 gigs and I'm in no hurry to dump it and start over, but I think about it VERY often! ;)

When I do make the bump some friends of mine are likely to end up with some very good parts.

get a Biostar Tforce550 AM2
2 Gigs decent DDR2 for $69 - 99 bucks
a Dual Core Brisbane 3600 X2 OEM $59.00
Arctic Cooler Freezer pro 64 $29

whatever videocard, hard drive case etc.
Overclock that $59.00 cpu to 2.6-3.0 GHZ

Sit tight, enjoy, and wait for Quad Core, at which point you can just substitute that cheap CPU with something nice.

AM2 is the way to go for budget builds. DDR2 prices and AM2 cpu prices are excellent and mobos for AM2 are not bad either. Here is a decent one for cheap ($56 AR FS): http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813138041

Hey! That board is perfect.

AM2, Dual IDE's and plenty of standard PCI slots for the legacy stuff.

Thanks for the find..

good chipset too

Not a bad board, not a bad idea either..

Speaking of Quad Core, any idea if this board will support Barcelona?
