Is 911 the appropriate number to report a drunk driver?

On my commute home today, I encountered a drunk driver. Person was swerving everywhere, cutting people off, tailgating, speeding, etc etc etc. I remember over the holidays seeing some signs saying to call if you see a drunk driver, but I couldn't remember if that number was 911. So is that the right number? Or is there another number for CHP (Live in CA, so we have CHP).

When I was in Cali for the winter. There was signs all over the highways stating something along the lines of "Report drunk drivers by dialing 911," so I guess calling 911 wouldn't be a bad thing.

I'm from CA too, and on new years they had those electronic billboards telling us to report drunk drivers by calling 911.

Good question. I was in the same situation some time ago, and wondered the same. Although in my case, I didn't have service/signal on my cell, so wouldn't have made a difference anyway.

Drunk drivers are an emergency, so 911 is definitely the number you want to call. Automobiles are a 1 ton blunt object that are considered a weapon when improperly used.

Isn't talking on the cell phone while driving illegal? So how would someone call 911 about a drunk driver? 😕

you're not holding a full conversation...and the situation presents a greater risk than making that phone call.

I believe use of a hands-free unit for cell is allowable. And there usually exceptions for emergency calls.

It's not illegal in too many place that I know of. But, even if it was, I'm sure there'd be an exception for calling 911.

This is a comon sense issue and OBVIOUSLY, you don't have any.

Hello, is anybody home?

I've actually called on a drunk driver once, as well as a raging truck driver, who was speeding and swerving all over the road. I stayed behind both of them, til the cops caught up.

But, after the fact....blah, probably not gonna do any good. If you have a license number, just call the police in that jurisdiction and give them the info.

One time I saw a lady swerving in her lane quite a bit and actually went over two lanes quickly to make a left hand turn. Thought she was drunk but she was talking on a cell phone. I didn't think a cell phone could impair your driving that much 😕. Although she could have been drunk as well, you never know

Hello, is anybody home?

It's great to know I don't have any common sense. I thought there might be another number I could call as other people have posted previously, such as:

In Florida I'd prolly call FHP (*FHP/*347), not 911.

I love how the number to report a single person in the carpool lane in Washington is something like 1-800-454-HERO.

I'd hope there'd be some kind of exception.
"There's a drunk driver on the interstate."
"What's the car and license plate number?"
"I don't know, I had to pull over and stop so I could make this call."
"...."
