dont make removing thermal paste a scientific issue pls ;)

Don't listen to these naysayers. They really don't know what they're talking about. I've been building computer for many years, and this is the only way to properly clean the paste:

(Ambient room temp. should be 25C for optimum performance.)

First, you have to buy >99% Isopropyl, and put that into a test tube. Then, put it in a centrifuge for >10 minutes so as to remove any particle impurities (this is important because particle impurities are not counted in the 99% rating). Once this is done, decant the alcohol into a new container that has been cleaned with a 7:3:pi/2 ratio of >99% isopropyl to acetone (pure nail polish remover) to methanol. Next, you must add water to the container so that the container is now full with the mixture (only ever add water to the alcohol; adding alcohol to water can result in heat, causing chemical reactions that destroy the necessary bonds). Then, pour out the solution so that one tenth of the original solution remains, and repeat 2 previous steps 8 more times (9 total steps of adding water and throwing away). The 8 successive additions of water and throwing away of solution are necessary to enact important nuclear and chemical changes, giving you Isopropyl-9. Also, I've found that alternating the hand with which you pour in the alcohol will lower your temps by roughly .367... C. (Start with the left hand.) You now have Isopropyl-9 in the test-tube. It is only necessary to add single molecule of Isopropyl-9 to the original alcohol; you can save the Isopropyl-9 for more cleanings later. Be careful, however, as a misstep at this point in the game can be dangerous, fatal even; if you ingest any or smell any fumes, I can't guarantee you will retain all your bodily functions.

Now, turn the heatsink and cpu inside a bowl of somesort. Pour the enhanced alcohol onto the heatsink (all of it) and let it sit overnight. Make sure the entire heatsink and cpu are covered. You will then have a cleaned HS and processor ready to go.

Hoped this helped

Okayyyy...

Naptha is a really good cleaner, and I assume it would clean well enough for this application. I used it last time I installed a chipset sink, and stripped all the old garbage right off--the thermal pad, adhesive, and rubber pad on the old sink I used.

Naptha is aka Zippo or Ronsonol lighter fluid.

Yes. 91% is fine. I don't think the percentage refers to purity - it refers to concentration of alcohol. Seriously, would you want to use 70% alcohol as a sterilizer if it was 30% contaminants? :)

Can you even legally buy 100% isopropyl alcohol? I haven't seen it, even at electronic stores. I think the one we use at the shop is 90%?
Phew, that was tough
Google. Pure isopropyl alcohol. First match.

Anyway, 91% - have at it. Even 70% works - but it's 30% water, so it takes longer to dry and isn't quite as powerful of a solvent.

I've used a damp paper towel before, it doesn't make too much of a difference unless you're a complete fraktard.

Bah.. this is funny. I use CK One and sometimes Grey Goose. They work great and smell better. Helps greatly OC'ing, too.

You can't drink isopropyl, even if it's 100%. Your liver oxidizes it into acetone (nail polish remover). The kind of alcohol that you can consume is ethanol.

I can't wait until cars run off ethanol, if that day comes. I'll be at the pump, filling up my car, and taking drinks right at the pump! ;)

Oh sure you can drink it. You'll just really really regret it, assuming it doesn't kill you.

Are you sure it's ethanol? Wtf? The 3 types of alcohol are Ethyl, methyl, and isopropyl. Is Ethyl=ethanol cause I really doubt it.
