Replacing heatsink. Is 91% isopropyl pure enough to clean the CPU and not leave residue?

I think so. I use 100% from the chemist, but 91% should be good enough? It also dries really quick, so you dont have to wait for days for the CPU to be completely dry.

Can you even legally buy 100% isopropyl alcohol? I haven't seen it, even at electronic stores. I think the one we use at the shop is 90%?

That depends on if you got the goos on the chip solidified. I had a chip that got the goo solidified and I had trouble cleaning with alchohol, BTW I used 70% Al I believe. Rubbing type.

I use Valvoline Pyroil Gas Dryer from an Advance Auto Parts store. $1.99 a bottle, and it is 100% isopropyl alcohol. It has a bittering agent added, which I assume is to keep alkies from drinking it, no residue I can see on a shiny smooth metal surface after it dries.
And I went to a camera store and got some lens cleaning tissues, they are lint free.

from the Material Safety Data Sheet at Valvoline:
2. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS

Ingredient(s) CAS Number % (by weight)
-------------------------------------------- ------------- -------------
ISOPROPANOL 67-63-0 90.0-100.0

Depends on the lense tissue. Many are not lint free Pec Pads are 99.99% lint free and soft enough for use on a CCD.

Methanol works well, I'm not sure about it's long term effects though. I know its great on glass.

When I cleaned my last CPU I used 10W 30. Got it off the shelf at Wal-Mart for 1.74 per quart! ;) Happy cleaning.
