Is $900 for an apartment reasonable when making $50k?

If all goes well, I'm about to be paying $750/month to buy a 1563 sq ft 3BR/1BA (in Nebraska) and I make $50k/year. Of course I've got a family to support too. Should actually be a pretty good deal since I should end up paying $80k for a house appraised at $86k. Once I add the second bathroom, I imagine it will go up. No garage, so if I can add one of those it will be comparable to houses in the area selling for $100k+.

Man, that is so not fair. My wife and I are looking for a house here in Seattle (I also make a little over 50k/year) and to get a 1400-1600sq/foot 3 bed/1bath anywhere near the city we are looking at 230-280k. So we are looking at ~1700 a month 🙁

I will hopefully be making more soon (just started 7 months ago) but as of right now that house is a major ouch. Still, it beats paying $1050 a month for a 800sq/foot apartment (and that is a GREAT deal for the neighborhood I live in).

$900 is on the higher end in the Syracuse area. Camillus is pretty nice, though. Figure another $100 for cable + internet, $100-$150 for electricity (maybe more depending on how your heat/AC is setup and how much you run it).

Right now, I'm splitting an apartment and my total bills come to $400/month. I don't have alot of excess money. I have 20-25% of my income going other places, though (retirement savings, tithe to church, medical insurance, etc.)

My philosophy when renting is to find the cheapest comfortable place. If it's not mine, I don't like to throw money at it. That's why I'll never lease a car.

Yeah, I wish I could get a one bedroom with a garage to save some money.

You work at Lockheed right? How much does your health insurance cost you each week?
