Is 8 Gig of memory worth while?

My son has Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit with 4 gigs of ram and he was wondering if he would see much benefit upgrading to 8 gigs. He has a duel monitor setup and plays all the latest games. Also uses Photoshop and Mya. He has a Asus Crosshair motherboard, Radeon HD 4870X2, AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz, CORSAIR XMS3 DHX 4GB. Is it worth while to add 4 more gigs?

It's very possible with Photoshop and Maya. I would suggest that you and your son evaluate his current memory usage. You can use the Resource Monitor that is on the PERFORMANCE tab of the WIN 7 Task Manager. Also, there is a tool available called Process Explorer that you could get good use from.

My rule of thumb after testing is that if you frequently or easily get to the point of about 3.3GB or so of total memory usage, then you should upgrade to more than 4GB. It's at about this point that you will see significant page file usage and that is a common performance bottleneck for many users.

If he can afford Photoshop ($800) and Mya ($2000, but the student edition is $600!), then certainly another $100 on an extra 4gb RAM shouldn't break the bank.

But yeah, bring up the NT Task Manager and it will tell you what the RAM usage is at a given point in time.

With anything above XP, I would definitely go 8. The newer windows OSes (Vista/7) will eat up a bigger chunk than XP, so you might only see 4-6 GB anyway. Having lot of ram is nice for running VMs too.

I would say go for it -- $100 is inexpensive compared to what Photoshop and Mya cost.

I don't use those apps, but personally I just went from 2 to 6 GB DDR2 and it's quite a bit faster for some apps that can use it. I have some Java apps that will quickly use up 2GB and 4GB if I allow it.

heck yeah! i paid $50 for 8gb of ddr2-800 with two evil eye led's on them. (4x2gb) - makes my nas server (transcode live,ut,vista media center) hella faster.

I guess he'll be adding more ram in the future. He was a student at Full Sail for a while. Now he's in the Navy.

Thanks

lol DEFINITELY go 8gb? gimme a break. There were tests done that show its useless to go to 4gb unless da specific app is asking for that (very very rare). for games he wont notice a diff.

Benchmarks can prove anything. But in general more memory is always better, so if it's really that cheap why not go for it?

photopshop and Mya will definitely benefit from more ram,

Always depends on what you're doing with them. You've got to work with some large pictures to use more than 4gb in photoshop in my experience..

Sure, but I don't know about you but I rarely ever have just one thing going on at once. So even if Photoshop and Maya don't individually get into the multi-gig mark, chances are that them together combined with FF, IE, etc will.

That is more than enough for all the applications he wants to run on that. Let me tell you my younger brother(cousin) is doing same stuff on his PC and he has got only 4 Giggs and he is happy with that.
You know you will always get greedy with these things.. but even if you like to upgrade it to 8 Gigs, let it go and he will enjoy it to his full 😉
