It is high but what is your CPU and MB also what OS and how are you measuring it. Is this a load temp?

Yeah, we need to know what components you have, but 60C is too much unless you have one of the few mobos that read the temp from the ondie-sensor, in that case it would be really low.

I agree unless this is an older asus mobo a 60c is verty unacceptable at idles...

NO xp chips should be doing this period...

My specs are:
GA-7VTXE motherboard
AMD Athlon 1800+XP processor
Socket A Coolermaster
512MB DDR
etc.

Still think 60 is too high? If so what can I do?

I had that socket a coolermaster for a short time and decided it wasnt doing the trick. Yes I think 60C is definitely too high, I would recommend purchasing a new HeatSink and fan combo. You may want to look into the Thermalright SK6 or the Alpha Pal 8045. I am currently using the Thermalright SK6 on my XP 1800+ and it does a great job. I was originally running the SK6 with the 60mm delta fan, but I have recently replaced the 60mm delta with a 80mm panaflo.

Yup, that temp is way too high.
Do you have any case fans? And what case do you have? Bad airflow can result in above normal temps, having a front intake and rear exhaust fan is a must. What's your case temp? A high case temp is a symptom of bad airflow.
A better hsf would of course help, but if you have no case fans and a high case temp I'll sugest to get some first and see if they don't help enough.
What tim do you use? No tim or badly applied paste could result in too high temp too.

< I had that socket a coolermaster for a short time and decided it wasnt doing the trick. >

What the hell are you talking about??? He doesn't list any model of the coolermaster and there has been many socket a models over the last year.

I run one dp5 or something that comes with a 60mm fan at 5400rpm ad it cools a much hotter 1.4tbird at 1.5ghz to a temperature of 44c idle...

I don't think you should comment on the state of coolermaster fans. That same fan would likely cool at the same rate a 1800+ or 1900+...

I think it likely do to poor air circulation and lack of case cooling....

It's not you who's stupid but me, I though about saying what tim means in my post, but I forgot

Tim means: Thermal Interface Material. You know, thermal pad (the wax-like pad underneath many hsf's (HeatSinkFan = cpu cooler)) and thermal grease (Artic Silver and such like). It fills the microscopic holes and trenches in the hsf and cpu and gives improved heattransfer.

I didn't know what tim meant it first either, so remember rule number one here: if you don't understand, ask. No question is too stupid (no computer related question that is, Off Topic is for stupid non-computer related questions :p)

For whatever it's worth; When my Athy was using the stock heat-sink (theremal pad removed, thermal grease (Si)), no O/C, a case that was not
well ventilated, I had working (backside) temps right at 60C.

Thanks Egrimm I appreciate it. All I need now is to sort out the no sound problem I'm having.

Hmm, 60c is only a problem if you are experiencing problems. I've had a Duron650@750, a Tbird 1.2, and now an XP 1700 who have always posted 55c-68c temps on 2 different mobos(A7V and K7 Master), but have never had heat related issues. Don't worry about it, it's likely not a very accurate temp anyway.

60C is high, Also considering you are using hte In socket temps which can be off by a lot.

anyways. There is no real need to get an ALpha or Sk-6 if you are not ocing. There are many other options available. Just check the usual websites that sell items and you're bound to get something good. Look for something that is copper and moves 30+cfm. It also depends on how much noise you can tolerate.

Obviously the Alpha or SK-6 is the best option, but that depends on how much you want to spend.

Arctic Silver is also a good option to consider (Thermal compound)
