Actually.. sometimes it's even more. It's not like I'm really addicted to the stuff. I can probably go 2 weeks without a drop even though I haven't really tried more than a week. It's just that whenever I'm thirsty.. I go for a coke.. whenever I'm at a McDonalds or other fast food restaurant.. it's coke.. I never order anything else. Except for the occasional beer at a hooters or bar.. :p

So how bad is coke for me anyway?

Oh yeah.. and how come canned coke tastes so much better than bottled?? hehe :p

I'm mainly a juice drinker, though I do enjoy a grape soda on occasion. :D

As for how bad it is for you, I dunno, there are no real healthy properties to it are there?

The only problem is the sugar and the calories.

If true, and only temporary, it's the new male birth control drink. :)

Too much coke can mess up your bones. Lesse...

9 months ago - messed up my left foot playing volleyball. Jumped up, came down, and my left foot felt like I'd tweaked something, like a small fracture.

6 months ago - took a spill while playing basketball and landed on my left hand. My left ring finger's joints are all swollen and messed up now and will probably stay that way for the next 10 years... bleh... Definitely some sort of fracture and ligament damage...

2 weeks ago - tweaked my right ring finger while bowling (BOWLING!!!!) and the joint's a little swollen, but I'm definitely being careful until it totally heals.

I talked to one of my roommate's who's a med-tech and she said that coke can deplete your calcium. A quick check on the internet showed a bunch of studies that seem to link the phosphoric acid in coke with bone impairment. Something like cola drinkers were 5 times more likely to fracture a bone than those who don't.

Couple this with the fact that I stopped drinking milk regularly about 10 years ago and I definitely haven't been getting the calcium intake that my body needs... and I'm not even freaking 30 yet... BLEH!!!!

It's a lot of unnecessary sugar and empty calories. It doesn't hydrate you as well as water either.

Caffeine, Sugar and what Satori said about phosphoric acid leaching the calcium from your teeth and bones.

Do you snort it... if so, it should me in milligrams, not milliliters. But there is also coke that is in liquid form, which is how it was taken in past centuries.

YES! Soft drinks make you really fat, really fast. The body cant process the sugur/calories effeciently and slows down your entire metabolism for the rest of the day. The net effect is that your body is busy having to hassle with the Coke that it cant really get the job done on your normal fat intake.

It does take time. But if you limit your soda to once or twice a week, preferably twice a month, you will lose weight fast. The first thing to go will be that waddle under your chin. Everyone has a waddle you just dont notice it.

I drink about 4-6 cans of coke a day. My parents tell me that it will make my bones brittle but then again they also tell me that watching television really close will eventually make me have to use glasses. I use to drink a 2 liter bottle every 2 days...is that a decrease from what I'm drinking now?

I normally believe snopes, but Dr. Gott has said at least twice in his syndicated columns that drinking coke when you have a broken bone can slow the healing process, and that drinking coke in excess can also weaken your bones.
Not to mention the "trace amounts" that the folks at Snopes seems to think it is, is enough to trigger a pretty harsh allergic reaction in both my mother and brother.

Anyway, the stuff about cleaning batteries and stuff is hogwash, but I've heard more than one source say it can be bad for the bones.

How can the Phosphoric acid in coke leech calcium from your bones??

1) The stomach acid is WAAAAAY more potent that the bit of Phosphoric acid in Coke.

2) The Coke is digested in the stomach and broken down into other chemicals. You can't tell me that the Phosphoric acid gets transferred into the blood and delivered to the muscles...

Hmmm.. the thing about cola weakening your bones could be true... sometimes my knees and ankles hurt just from working at the computer for a couple of hours.... but I don't think I really notice it after playing sports.. seems to be just as out of shape back when I was 15 :p I'm 19 now..

I don't know about coke making me fat though.. I'm actually really thin.

Actually, the Urban Legends site never addresses the calcium-leeching concern. It mostly deals with the corrosive affects of coke.

BTW, that has to be one of my favorite web-pages out there. I check back every couple weeks to see what new updates they've got. I spent an entire day at work (Shhhh...) reading that site the first time I found it. :)

It's not from the acidity of the phosphoric acid, it is more from (and I'm hardly a biochemist) the phosphate ions bonding with calcium ions (in the blood?).

<< 2) The Coke is digested in the stomach and broken down into other chemicals. You can't tell me that the Phosphoric acid gets transferred into the blood and delivered to the muscles... >>

Phosphoric Acid (H3PO4) is an ionic compound like other acids. When in aqueous form, it's really a bunch of free-floating H3 and PO4 ions. The HCl and other enzymes in the stomach (and again,I'm hardly a biochemist) would be hard-pressed to split those phosphate ions into anything smaller. When other cations come into contact with the phosphate, given a high enough positive charge (calcium ions?) they could associate with the phosphate ions and "leech" them away. The H+ ions in the H3 bond easily with O2- ions to form water.

So perhaps leeching from the bones is more of a misnomer than leeching calcium from the bloodstream and preventing it from reaching the bones?
Here's a link to an article regarding acids leeching the enamels from teeth.

Anyways, I'll say for a 3rd time I'm hardly a biochemist, so I could easily be quite wrong. Feel free to strike me down :)
