Is 60-63 degrees Celcius too hot for Athlon XP...?

Chip is 1600+. not overclocked yet. Runs at 50C in idle, but up to max of about 63C in graphics-heavy games like Deus Ex and Falcon 4.0.
Systems been stable tho.

That's WAY to high.
XP's are noted for running cooler than the TBirds.
It shouldn't really be any higher than 11C over your case ambient.
You need to see if the HSF is seated correctly..

man that's hot... for an XP my oced 1800+ only hits 49C full load...

get a better HSF..it's worth it
i used to had a 750 TBird that runs 60~65C. i didn't care back then since it is stable but after 5 months it fried... (it's never been oced, and i used the stock HSF)

wow...thanks for the info. AMD says the chip is rated up to 90C but I thought this was too high...

Whats the best HSF to get?

That's WAY too high, my Xp 1600+ runs around 45C idle with a case temp of 35C oc'ed to 1800+ (1,533Ghz), when I get over 50C (when oce'd to 1900+) it crahes.
What hsf are you using? Those temps I mentioned are with a not-so-highly-performing-but-quiet Molex Radial Fin hsf, but I have an Alpha PAL8045 that I'll install when I get the time.
That's also what I would suggest, an Alpha PAL8045 with as loud / good performing fan as you want, you can go very silent with a low db/low cfm fan and it would still be colder than now or go for max oc ability with a 45+cfm fan and have to live with some noice.

Have you set your A7V266E to read the XP Internal diode?

IF so, then you cannot compare temps to anyone else here. if you are, you're reading internal XP core temps, not socket-thermistor, and judging from early info, your temps are fine.

I have an A7V266 and Athlon XP 1800+ with a similar problem, but i have a good HSF (an SK6).

I dont think i have set up the board to read the internal thermistor (or whatever you called it).

How would i go about doing that

Thanks

is hte A7v266 a kt266a board, or a kt266 board? There's a jumper that is set for "reserved cpu temp function" as documented in the manual, versus a jumper setting for athlon/duron. It is believed that the reserve function enables the Asus ASIC chip to read the info off the itnernal diode pins of an AthlonXP/ Morgan based Duron.
