Is 512mb RAM too much for WinME?

I'm running Win2k right now and I want to switch back...atleast for now. I've read a few threads about memory and Windows. AFAIK, 512mb is perfect for Win2k but not for Win98se. How about WinME? I heard (from another thread) WinME has better memory management than Win98se. Does that mean 512mb would be great for it or would 256mb be good enough?

Thanks,

If there is no performance difference between 256mb and 512mb in WinME or Win98se, I would like to sell or trade that 256mb stick.

Well, with Win ME, there is a max of 512Meg.... There is a known bug with any amounts above 512Meg...

monitor your RAM usage over a period of like a week (if ME will run that long 😉 )...see what it peaks at and what the average usage is. If it never peaks about 256 then you should certainly sell the extra 256 (though I'd wait for mem prices to go back up)...if it almost never peaks at 256 then you have to decide if it's worth the small difference in performance...also keep in mind future performance and upgradeability. What if you decide to go back to Win2k, or to Whistler, or your next favorite app happens to consume 50MB all on it's own? I have 256MB now with another stick of 256 on the way. I'm in Win2k, but I also multitask quite a bit, and if I was running Win95, I think I would still benefit from the extra RAM.

you didn't say what sort of usage you use for your pc but while you'll see little difference between 256 & 512 Mb, I would stick with the 512 Mb.

I'd say go with the 512mb. I'm running 512mb with Win98SE/Win2k and I couldn't be happier. It's really good for games that can use a lot of memory(Q3A).

That is simply not true...this topic has been covered so many times it's starting to make my teeth ache....with 512MB and up you have to be careful of how you set your VCache and AGP Aperture size, if you set them wrong you can cause problems, but a Win9x/ME system can be perfectly stable with 512MB+ of RAM.

Also the top-down problem related to cache is with ancient Socket7 boards so that's not an issue either.

512MB is not too much for WinME....it's probably useless for WinME, depending on what you do it's very very unlikely WinME will need more than 256MB...but it won't hurt anything to have it in there.

Well...I guess my question should have been if I really needed it. I play games like UT and Diablo 2...thats it. I do a lot of multitasking though...maybe 5+ netscape or IE windows open, winamp with those visualization plug-ins, a few servers for my LAN, a very (very!!) small database, a little image manip but my images are no more than 10mb each. Thats pretty much it..nothing major. I'm starting to think 256mb is good enough.

Oh btw..

I *AM* running Win2k right now and I want to go to WinME or Win98se. Please actually read my post before commenting. Many of you will tell me Win2k is better..and I agree but I have some problems with my hardware in Win2k. My hardware would work a lot better in Win9x.
