i still have a hard time deciding between an a80 and sony dsc p92. The sony has more megapixels is cheaper and has decent reviews. but the a80 has more manual feature and im not too sure which cam has better pic quality

any thoughts

Not necessarily. You have to look at optics, the quality of the sensor itself, etc. A 4MP camera with quality glass and a good sensor is always better than a 5MP camera with junk glass or a sensor with noise problems, etc. I'm a Canon whore, but I'd go with Canon over Sony any day.

Let me get this straight.

Let say 3 meg can put out an 8 x10

and the 4 meg can put out an 11x14

but if the optics were crappy on the 4 and the optics were better on the 3 the 3 could also do an 11 x 14 and look better doing it??

Better optics make the most use of the MP. if a cmara feeds 1/2 the light to the same size MP it will not look as good.

There's no way to quanitfy it like that. You're going to have to look at images from the cameras you're considering and draw your own conclusions. There should be samples on the review sites like Dpreview.

This thread was a simple question regarding megapixels ... and you had to turn it into something sexual. :D

Well in that case, my megapixels are bigger than your megapixels!

Depends on the lens size being used. When it comes to the Canon S45 and G3, most agree that they are better than their S50 and G5 cousins.

ok then are sony lenses clearer. again the reviews are farly comparable for both cameras.

hopefully someone on this forum has used a sony digi and canon that would be great to hear a response

You need to look at the entire picture and consider flash quality, lens quality, capabilities, and feel. I've owned a sony p50, Canon G2, Canon S50, and Olympus C2020 zoom. I've also used others including the Pentax Optio (forgot model), Canon s200, s400, and so on. If you were only looking at megapixels, out of those, you'd get the Canon S50, which isn't bad, but in actual use, I prefer my G2.

The G2's flash is a lot brighter and it illuminates more of the area. The quality of the pictures seem to be a better also. I take thousands of pictures and the G2, to me, just generates better quality images.

So, like anything else, see if you can demo a couple or borrow a friends and try it out.

Ok i think the image quality on the sonys are comparable. I checked out the reviews.

So i think i will go with the sony now because it is 50.00 cheaper and has more megaweenies. I dont understand why the a80 is mo expensive. i think if canon did a 5 mega a series camera at the same price its running i wouldnt have such a hard time deciding.

Regarding the 5>4 argument look at the Olympus C-4000 first and then look at the Gateway DC-50 review: Oly is 4mp while the Gateway is a 5mp. I think after looking at the two you may find a slightly different view on MP's and camera quality.

MP's can be extremely misleading. If the rest of the camera is crap, then a 20 MP camera would take crappy pics compared to a 5 mp cmera with great optics.

Look at a few sites as well as the ones I linked to above:

PC Photo Review

dcreviews

Imaging Resource

Megapixel.net

These sites are very good as to showing you the cameras features and pic quality, with lots of pictures taken in different situations. Some like Steves and Imaging resource are fairly extensive in their detail and they give their recommendations at the end.

Have a look at lenses for SLR cameras. The price should give you a hint on how important the lens is on a camera regardless of what type.

He's not exactly comparing a Canon vs. a Wal-Mart digital camera. The optics are fine on both Sony and Canon, I doubt there is much difference between the quality of lens between the two. I'd go with Canon because of the manual controls and I dislike Sony's media, but that might be just me. 4mp and 5mp isn't a big difference.

i have been spending way too much time on this.

but the sony is cheaper about 30 plus dollars maybe 80 if i get the rebate.

and i think a80 may have a better lens im not sure.

i plan on using this camera for indoor shots mostly. and the redeye reduction feature is nice on the sony. does the canon have something comparable.

last i have been t o all the forums and websites. but none make a flat reccomendation. i do know the argus and gateway cams are crappy but i wasnt interested in those anyway.

money is a pain in the but, i wich the canon was a b cheaper.

not always, some lousy cams just have no detail, almost as if they interpolate to a higher resolution:p
if a camera is in the 4-5 megapixel range i doubt its utter crap.

Seems like it would be that way, but it is not.
1. The lens vary from camera to camera and make a huge difference.
2. Also, as you go up in megpixels, generally background noise increases.
3. As, you go up in price, technology and feature that counter act back ground noise get better.

I dunno if the Sonys have changed, but I've always hated the colour balance on the older Sony digicams. The Canons were more accurate. I use a Canon G2 by the way.
