Hi,
My wife uses a notebook for the office work. (Microsoft words, excel spread sheet and 3dmax)

I am thinking to get a 24" or a 27" monitor for her so she could have a similar office setup as i do. (i have a notebook connecting to a 24" Dell ultrasharp, it is a FHD)

I find thinking to get a LG 27" for her. Something like a 27UL650

Is a 4k really make a difference when using microsoft words, excel, 3dmax?

Isn’t a 30” or larger sized monitor sort of big to be looking at on a desk like an arms length away?
Who says it needs to be arms length away?

I have my 43" 4k wall-mounted behind my desk and it's about 1 and 1/3rd arms length away and it's pretty much perfect, easily fits in my field of view, text at 100% scale is readable and crisp, and you can fit tons of windows on-screen at once.

Yeah I feel it would be too big. I originally wanted 32" but due to price, I just got 2x 28" instead which ended up about the same, maybe even a bit cheaper. There's a ridiculous price jump once you get into 30" and more. I find 28" is probably the best bet and I'm glad I never went 32. Any bigger and you have to turn your head a lot, or you end up putting it further which comes up to the same. Smaller also means room for 2 or more. When it comes to monitors pixel count is more important than size as it determines how much room you have for work. For things like watching movies, gaming etc, then size might be more important. So guess it depends what you use it for most of the time.

I see this is an old thread, but really do want to encourage everyone (or maybe just non-gamers) to consider larger displays. A few years ago I jumped from a 27" 1080 display to a 50" 4K hisense TV. The pixel density comes out to be about the same while the screen real estate is at least tripled. So very nice to be able to put two or three reasonably sized windows on screen at the same time. And none of the pesky bezels in a multi-screen setup. I sit at arm's length and can pretty easily see the whole screen with just eye movement.

IMHO you need a screen of this size for the whole concept of "windows" to really make sense. You owe it to yourself yo try it.

50" would be way too big imo. Unless you're putting it right on the wall at the far end of the desk, then I could MAYBE see it being ok, but I would rather wait for 8k TVs to go down in price before doing that. I think that would be the sweet spot, 55" 8k. That would be the equivalent of 16 HD monitors, pretty crazy.

As a side note, burn in appears to still be a thing with some monitors, I had no idea. My Asus Tuf gaming 4ks are suffering from it. :( I tend to leave windows open in the same spot and now I have a bunch of burn in. I only started noticing it recently as it's only noticeable on dark backgrounds. kinda sucks as my workflow involves leaving lot of windows open, as with 4k I have the room for it so rather than switching between windows all the time I just have them all spread out. Been trying to get into the habit of moving them slightly now but still kind of annoying.
