Is 48 degrees too hot?

I have my MSI K7TPro2A + Duron 650 (overclocked to 950) running at 48C according to MSI's software. The chasis is 46C. Is this too hot?

This is my setup:

Duron 650 (overclocked b/w 950 and 988) with FSB 104
Alpha PAL6035 HSF with Delta 38mm Fan
MSI K7TPro2A Motherboard
Kingmax 256MB (128 x 2) PC150 CAS2
Enermax 431Watts PS with Dual Fans
Fong Kai FK-603 Case
2 HDD
1 DVD Drive
1 CD Writer
1 FDD
5 PCI cards
 
hmmm... that isn't too high, but i'm not sure if it is a compensated readign or not.

Also, your case temp of 46C is pretty alarming. Do you have both fan spots in the Fong-Kai used/occupied by fans?

When I start my system after a 12 hr rest it is at 37C after a while it peaks out at 48C and I am yet to do any stress tests. These temps are with simple internet browsing.

Why is the 46C of the chasis high? How does it matter? The case is a feet away from a closed heating vent! The case came with 2 fans. One for the front of the case and another just above the CPU. I have connected the front case fan. I do not find any more power point (or pins) to connect to the PS for the CPU vent duct fan. The Enermax has two fans, one towards the back of the system and suction fan about 5 inches above the CPU HSF.
 
That case temp is a bit high for my liking. I'd get a slipper, or something and hook up the addition ducted fan on the fong-kai, even with the second enermax fan doing some exhaust work.

Are you using thermal grease? What kind?

ALso, if the MSI has temp compensation, then the temps are okay. If it does not, then your temps are a bit warm, but still nothing to really worry about. Get the case temp down a bit, and you'll be fine.

I am using an Arctic Silver Thermal Grease (for large contact area). I do not know if the K7TPro2A is displaying compensated temps. K7TPro2A owners please help.

I will get the duct fan fixed. I appreciate your quick responses.
 
Hmm... you should have used Arctic Silver for small surfaces, but there isn't any performance difference.

One last question, is the PAL6035 you're using use a socket A clip, or an older socket 370 clip?

It has a socket a clip and the instructions that came with it said it is compatible with both Socket-A for AMD and some other type for Intel.
 
drop that case temp ! , he he, add a few fans if need be, but if this is your maximum stressed temps, your good as long as your system remains stable...
 
Which way are your fans oriented? For the setup that you have, this is what you want:

HSF fan on suck and blowing up from the CPU

The duct fan should blow OUT. This means you have a flip it around. This would be better than the default since it would ensure that the air flows front to back.

The front intake should blow in. If you don't have one, get one. You case temp is alarming. If you get your case temp down, then maybe the Alpha can do its job. Right now it can't dissipate the heat without a temperature difference.

Also, make sure that there is ample space around the front and back of the case to ensure airflow.
 
I have everything setup correctly except for duct fan.

What is case temp? Is it the temperature of the air inside the case? If so, it makes sense why the CPU temp doesn't go down.
 
Yeah, that's what I mean. I thought that you said that your chassis/case temp was 46C, which is ridiculously hot. It might be the reading for the chipset, but 46 is still hot for that. I have mine running in the upper 20s.

How hot is the room that you are running the computer in? Also, is there any heat coming from the heat duct? If so, you may want to move your comp to a cooler spot.
 
I have a Duron 600@950 with the FOP38 and average 29C according to the MSI monitor. And I thought that was a little high.

That is because your temps are flat-out wrong. MSI has not implemented a compensation in your bios yet, so the temps are skewed, at a minimum, 8C too low. And probably a bit warmer than that, depending on your case ambient temp.

I did as you suggested, except for the duct fan which I am yet to install. I made the case fan to suck air and guess what! My case temp has fallen down to 35C from 46C even after 24hrs and the CPU temp is around 41C as opposed to the initial 48C. For a 15C difference in the case temp the CPU temp has gone down by 7C.

I will try to reduce the case temp even further and see how it helps the CPU temp.
 
Excellent. Nice to know it worked out. Your CPU temps sounds fine, though your chipset temp is still a bit on the warn side. Its still well within acceptable ranges though.
 
i have my processor temp at 40celcius and system temp is always higher than the processor

i think the system temp is indicating the chipset temp on the mobo

is mine too hot??

There is either something wrong with how your SE6 reads the internal diode, or you're reading the temsp wrong. There is no way for a cpu, with standard-cooling, to be running cooler than the air being passed through its heatsink.


Good MB temps are within 5C of ambient case temps. Good cpu temps(and you can't compare these, or are they even accurate readigns) are a range depending on your setup. For a 1ghz, high40s, low50Cs isn't really a problem.
