Is 46C too hot for my chip?

I want to start overclocking, but despite my Thermaltake SuperOrb + Artic Silver II compound (which I completely fvcked up trying to apply, got it all over the chip :() my AMD T-bird 1000mhz is still running at 45C~50C.

If it wasn't a super-orb(or any other heatsink that "manipulates" socket-thermsitor temps) it wouldnt' be too hot. For a super-orb, in general, it still isn't too hot, but I wouldn't expect a huge overclocking gain.

The superorb is not a very good heatsink fan. You should look into a Alpha pal6035, fop32 or 38, or a tisol.

First off you might need better circulation in case, or you might have too much arctic silver. You just need enough to make the thinnest of coats that will make both parts touch better. With too much you get a thermal layer built up in the paste, and that can lead to poor cooling. Tbird's run hot anyway. Up to 50C under full load with stock heat sink. But you should definately think about getting rid of that orb, no one seems to like it very much for serious cooling. If you are serious about cooling, think spending a few more dollars and invest in a water cooling system. I dont think anything without a peltier can compete with a water cooler, even a room temp water does better than any heatsink/fan combo and any efficient heatsink/fan has the downside of sounding like a jet engine :(

Good luck man!!! Overclocking is a blast!!!

Wow just looked at your rig. Nice setup!!!

Not to mention that I had to bend some capictators to just fit the damn fan on the chip.

I will admit that the fan is the only part of my computer I didn't research on, and boy am I pissed that I didn't. :|

what would happen if it got up at about 65C? Mine is running at that temp. when stressed... I have ordered a Global Win FOP-32, so my problem should be solved!

Don't get a coolermaster, they isn't worth the money!

AlmightyOne,

Sorry I had ranted to you about calling coolermaster crap cause I thought that is what mine is and it is working to perfection, however I found out it is a Super Cooler...Opps

If you read the rant I apologize if not Why is the coolermaster crap? Is it because it pushes a rather low 15cfm for a 4500 rpm fan?
