IS 400k/sec on a d/l test what a "1meg" cable connection should get/average?

I just got the cable modem installed and I don't really know what to expect or which test is best to use, so I'm wondering what other folks are getting. Please post your average speed and type of dsl service(max d/l speed )

well, what do you mean by 1 meg? 1 megabit, or 1 megabyte? Either way, 400kilobytes a second is way off.

A 1 megabit connection is roughly 128kilobytes per second. A one megabyte connection is roughly 1024 kilobytes per second.

Right now I'm on at&t broadband internet, and I'm not sure what my real download is. But when I with MediaOne, I could receive at 800k/s, and that wasn't from a test site, it was 2 friends on edu connections sending to me at 400k/s each. My upload is capped at 15k, unfortunately.

Keep in mind the difference between "KBps" (kiloBYTES per second) and "kbps" (kiloBITS per second). There are 8 bits in a byte. So a rough conversion would be either to divide or multply by 8. If your browser says 300 KB/sec when downloading, you're getting close to 2400 kbits/sec (or 2.4MBits/sec). A 1 MegaBit/sec connection would be roughly 125 KiloBYTEs/sec when downloading something.

Now, there is some overhead involved in converting the numbers, so this is just a rough conversion rate, but you get the idea.

I'm on Adelphia PowerLink and get about 330 KiloBYTEs/sec during off-peak hours. So, that would roughly translate to 2640kbps or 2.6 Megabit connection (about 2 and a half times faster than a standard T1).

If you look at DSLreports.com, you'll see that cable and DSL connection speeds vary greatly by provider. Some are relatively slow and others and insanely fast (higher than 4000-5000kbps).

A T1 is 1.54 Megabits per second.

My 1.5Mbps cable connection just got a rating of 208/53 from the LA server. 4x faster than 56k it says. The cable company says "no problems outside the house." Wish they'd get to upgrading the main lines out here to fiber optic like they are for the less rural areas.

The room that I'm posting from is having some hardcore problems with DHCP and basic networking. Most of the time we have to release/renew to get a connection every few minutes -sometimes we can't get an IP back for several minutes. When we do get the connection back, it's fairly unstable. That test should be a lot faster on our T1.

It's not an oddity for me to get 2Mbit on my cable.. Infact the other day I was receiving a steady 2Mbit... Unfortunatly my upload is only around 1Mbit . But hell beats 56k that I was on just 3 or so years ago. The last cable company I had (local one) sucked so bad.. Jeez RCN cable 0wnz. Their billing is screwey tho.. they said before they weren't billing me for cable TV.. they fixed this and now once again they aren't billing me for it. This time I am not pointing it out to them.

I used to get 3.5 Mb/s on my cable. Then Insight went and hosed the system. Now I've got retransmissions and random packet loss which lowers my D/L speeds to 1.5 - 2 Mb/s.

400KBps is great for a 1Mbps connection (ISPs usually advertise megabits (Mbps as opposed to MBps). 400KBps is 3200Kbps (multiply by 8).
