400kilobytes/second or 400kilobits/second?

If it is 802.11b, 400KB/s = 3.2mbit/s which is... on the low side of acceptable.

If your contract is for 2Mb/sec. service then it is superb.

If your contract is 4Mb/sec. Then 400KB/sec. is you should get.

If your contract is 6Mb/sec. it is a little slow.

If your contract is 10Mb/sec. it is BAD.

Um, taking an online speed test measures your speed to the INTERNET. If your wireless is 54mb that's the speed that your computer is connected to the internal wireless network. Apples & Oranges as far as speed comparisons are concerned.

Wireless sucks for this reason. Everybody will tell you the speeds you SHOULD be getting, but you never really achieve them.

Try hooking up to your router with a wire and turning off your wireless. then run the online speed test again and see if you have the same speed you had when you were connected wirelessly. with my old wireless router I used to have 4-5mb/s with my new one I get 9-10 which matches up to my internet connection

Sure you do. 20-22 Mbs is normal for 802.11G and I get that all the time.

But if you have other 2.4Ghz devices then you cannot achieve this performance due to interferrence. Depending on how much noise you have even 1 Mbs can be good. Wireless is slow.
