Yes, thats how most people end up there. But if its working well for you now, I wouldn't bother upgrading it just to get the 2x2 configuration. If you were buying ram anyway I'd say go with the 2x2 but with what you have now, I'd say not unless you want to go 64 bit.

And just how much ram was considered high end two years ago? and what was the OS most folks used?
Seriously. take into consideration things already said, folks, and you will see that with vista's bloating, and the after-vista os introduction coming before the OP's 2 year time frame, and then think about what games will require in two years, and 6-8GB is right about there, maybe even a bit low.

I think there are few points that maybe should be clarified, first off you can't go over or even to 4gb in Vista 32 anymore then you can with XP.

If you wish to go over that you'd have to go to Windows Vista 64. I seriously doubt many games will be designed for that as games are always designed to get as many customers as possible, and for a number of reasons I think a year from now the majoity of users will still be on 32 bit systems, Vista also is to Xp as ME was to 98....except with even more headaches. It is esentially the same kernel.... Home OS's and workstation OS's have always followed server OS kernals....and this time will be no different server 2008 will spawn it's own newer 64 bit OS...and will have no 32 bit version. Lookfor that to be out in a couple of years.

Here's another dirty secret you can get dx10 on Xp and it runs faster.....vista gives zero performance increase on any current title, even crysis the only game out arguably that makes real use of dx10 can be caused to run with the same bells and whistles on XP, (look up vaious "how to's" if you actually have a machine with the muscle to run it with all the bells and whistles maxed) There is not a single title out or coming out this year that will run faster on vista then xp. Crysis runs better on xp then vista marketing hyperbole aside.

SO 4gb is as much as you will be able to use on any game on xp of vista 32 and you will actually only get like 3.20 of that....vista 64 is full of problems and will be replaced by the next windows os kernel by the time game developers start to make 64 bit required games for the pc. And I would highly recommend staying the hell away from Vista 64 for gaming for the near future unless you really like being on the cutting edge of bug hunting and incompatability issues.

Just my 2 cents....or maybe a nickel.

+1.
Get a mobo with 4 slots, so you can add more later if need be.
