Is 3D for theater and home officially dead?

I dont see much adverts for new theater movies and home equipment with 3D. is it officially dead? If so i am glad. I never thought it was implemented properly, especially at home. I have seen very few movies in 3D and thought it was better in 2D. Im curious as we get closer to 4K and much bigger screens if 3D will make a comeback then.

Always was a niche. It has been around for years and will continue to be around. There was a massive push to move the industry in the direction of everything being 3D. It worked with theaters to a degree, but not as popular with the home theater crowd as the majority of the industry wanted it to be.

It won't ever be dead, but it may be awhile before you see a massive push for it like there was with the 3d flat panel tvs.

at home 3D was a niche before and it's a niche now, but the consumer technologies changed (120 hz full hd screens etc.) so there was a bit more publicity for a period of time.

Many theaters did upgrade to 3D and many films coming out are in 3D though, so it's not like it died down, it just didn't spread to the homes.

they showed off some new 3d tech that i read about on avs a few months ago, for home tvs that is glasses-less 3d, and it looked pretty promising. it also didn't cause the screen to get any dimmer, which is a huge plus. that is pretty much all i know about it, but the feedback was promising.

i personally like 3d. it adds another dimension to the movie that is just neat. sure it's gimmicky and isn't necessary, but it does add something to it that i like. it's kind of like how surround sound isn't necessary to watch movies, but when you do have it, it makes the movie much better and more enjoyable.

that is kind of how i feel about 3d as well. it's not necessary, but to me it makes the experience more fun than the 2d version, for the most part. there are some movies i've seen though where it detracts from the movie, with the only one i can think of that i really disliked was the newest spiderman movie.

i have a 3d tv and a 3d projector at home. i just wish you could rent more 3d stuff but i will purchase 3d blurays if it's a movie i am interested in and i can find it for around $20. most recent ones were the new star trek and wwz because there was a deal for both 3d blurays for $32 shipped.

3D needs to be seen in IMAX for it to really be effective. Otherwise it feels like you're just looking through a distant window. I saw Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX 3D and even knowing it wasn't filmed natively it still looked very impressive.

I have a 3d tv, and it's fun to watch the occasional 3d movie. I hope the 4k thing takes off though, those tvs are nice. Hopefully the 84" ones will come down a lot in price though 🙂

A 4k 84" TV is  worthy. THAT is something I want and the content to go along with it.

It's a gimmick they were trying to push down our throats for about a year. Thing is, people don't like 3D as much as electronics companies hoped we would.

I have a 3d TV and it's a "nice to have". Thankfully I didn't pay a premium.

It cost me $100 at the time to get 3d on a comparable Samsung TV. I said, why not.

I tell you what though, when we pop in Avitar and watch it in 3d it really is amazing.......but we don't find ourselves rematching many movies. And 3d movies are expensive to buy.

It's no different than 4k crap now though. it's just another push from the industry to sell you more shit you don't really need.

4k will def support more plastic surgeries though as 1080p already forced plastic onto SO many people within the industry.

In my opinion 3D is a gimmick to sell higher priced tickets and DVDs, that's all. I find it distracting and notice how it's most often used as a crutch for poor movies.

My projector does 3D and it came with two pairs of fancy-looking glasses. The glasses have not even left the plastic as I have zero interest in watching 3D.

I only own a 3d TV because it was on sale and a really nice LG tv. I've never used the 3d features and I can't imagine why I would want to.

If you already own 3d gear you are are only denying yourself by not Avitar on it.

Why not? Does not make any sense.

It's like getting a Supercharger on a car and taking the belt off of it....wtf?

My kids like 3D movies, so the only things I have seen in 3D are some of the recent animated kids movies.

It is pretty cool, but I would not pay extra at the theatre or at home to have it (except, maybe for the NFL in 3D - Now that could rock).

I can see it now, NFL in 3D and them changing the cameras so the ball comes flying into your lap.
