Is 3 Mbps "high speed" internet?

Power went out for an hour this morning and when it came back the cable modem wouldn't sync. Comcast says its my area and they hope to have it fixed "soon"

So, I am on my backup DSL 3Mbps line. And it sucks. I mean really sucks. There was a time I would have called 3Mbps high speed but not any more. Even just surfing takes me to pages that load slowly.

We need a category between dial up and high speed. Advertising 3 Mbps as high speed is ludicrous.

Got a special two year deal for my business phone that added the DSL for no extra charge. My main business line is thru Comcast and is 80 Mbps.

Until this week 3mbps was the best I could get. I just upgraded to u-verse 6mbps, which is the new best I can get in my area. No difference from a web surfing perspective. Pings are the same (around 50-100). The main difference is that my download speeds on steam have indeed doubled, which is basically all I wanted anyway.

When ADSL came out here in the early 2000's it was 1mb down (not sure what up was) and it was considered high speed. It's actually funny to see the equipment for that. Huge racks with newbridge shelves and huge cards that go in. 8 customers per card. lmao. At the time this was revolutionary though. The new shelves have like 48 customers per card or something like that. Right now we get about 8mb. I think you can get around 12 if you are very close to the CO.

Thing is 1mb was more than fast enough when it came out but now webmasters like to overuse flash, javascript and overall bloat up web pages so they use way more bandwidth.

BBC iPlayer (with HD video content) requires just over 3Mbit/sec.

At the place I lived at previously, I could get ~8Mbit/sec. I moved home to a place 5 minutes away and it dropped to 3Mbit/sec. I was not impressed. My wife and I regularly encountered throughput issues related to a single download while continuing to browse.

I found a wiring issue and the line speed instantly doubled. Once it did that, browsing and downloading was a lot more bearable for us. Since then it's gone up to 8-10, and the line was upgraded to ADSL2 so we have triple the upload bandwidth (a mind-boggling 1Mbit/sec! </sarcasm>). Fibre broadband is now available but we're on a tight budget and it wouldn't make enough of a difference to us anyway IMO. The only way that my wife might appreciate it is when she tries to upload a video to FB and I insist that it has to be done overnight (with fibre I would be surprised if it saturated the upstream, but I could be wrong).

that will do it too. how often do you reinstall windows though? for most 3mb is enough for daily use of the connection.

when you throw in huge downloads and games (though not as bad) is when it bogs down.

but for general looking at web pages (even youtube to apoint) and reading email 3mb is far more then enough.


though i admit i want a 100meg fiber connect...

Are there a lot of folks here that have backup (hardwired) internet connections? I mean technically many people have backup connections through a tethered smart phone so lets leave that out of the equation.
