Is 3 3D monitors overkill for gaming?

Just wondering.. if you had 3 3d Monitors would your peripheral vision even be able to see the other two since it is in 3D?

of course real life is 3d and we have no problem seeing with our peripheral vision but I was wondering if it would be different for any reason.

It works great; i run 3D Vision in 5760x1080. it's just a bit overkill unless you have the bucks for the displays and the HW to run it.

Nothing is overkill when you get it free.
Define free. i have a 3D Vision evaluation going up on Tuesday. i took over 5 months to complete it with 80 plus games.

i like it .. but 3D Vision Surround is less bang for buck than 3D Vision

In other news, his rig can simulate a nuclear explosion and all its after affects in 3.2 ns.

Too bad Samsung's wearable display only comes in 720p and no 3D.

No, it is not an overkill. 3x120hz projectors @ 1080p for the win.

the game is DNF.

but doesnt 3D require you to sit dead smack in front of the monitors? if they are in an angle, do you still get the 3D properly?

Well, you do have to sit somewhat centered in front of the 3 displays. And actually the two outside displays are angled a bit so that it looks natural when you look directly at it.

The issue with 3D Vision *Surround* is that you need a game that looks great in Surround and in S3D. Some games are spectacular - like Just Cause 2 (and DNF). Most of the action is in the center screen and the two side screens add to the FoV and the immersion. Other games are less 3D/Surround Friendly (like Bulletstorm) where the action on the periphery is a bit confusing.

Some older games also look great in widescreen and in S3D like Oblivion

i have a 3D Vision evaluation going up on my site tomorrow AM ... it is the results of nearly six months of pla.. i mean evaluating it. If it isn't finished, then expect Part 1 tomorrow AM.

Not true for all things, I used to think i need new high DPI mice, multi buttons, G15 keyboards. I got tired of installing drivers/configuring them for every game. FPS just felt diffrent than when i used to play them with high DPI. So i got rid of them, got generic mouse/kb and gaming improved drastically.

Even with monitors, some games you get a advantage of playing at a lower rez than high rez.

Just saying.. :p

Apoppin: "Evaluating" games in 2011, For Science!
i know it is a dirty and difficult job pla ... i mean *evaluating* . . . over 80 PC games in Widescreen 3D Vision including playing 6 new games from start to finish in 4 or 5 months . . .
. . . but then someone has got to do it

And the hard part is writing the damn article. It's like trying to 'demonstrate' color TV to someone who only has black and white; same thing with trying to show the superiority of a 120Hz display over a 60Hz display for 2D fast-paced gaming.

In some ways, I think it's the fact that you have to put up with misconceptions based on the horrid state that is 3D movies. Although, I've done 3D on my PS3, and I have been less than enthused with it overall. I guess just getting a mere 3D background just makes you say, "is that it?"

I'm actually still looking for a decent keyboard to replace my G15. :\ I'd like to find one with good anti-ghosting (or no ghosting), but some of them do dumb things. Like how SteelSeries uses the fat Enter keys, which I absolutely refuse to use... how am I supposed to hit the "pipe" key (as a programmer) when it's in the wrong spot! :|

Have you played Super Stardust HD? - it is said to be the state of the art for PS3's S3D.

Just getting depth in 3D is not enough to give up 2D imo. It certainly adds to the "cool" factor, but playing in 3D needs to give the end user more immersion and ideally better tactical information. And there are only a handful of PC games that are actually designed with S3D in mind. i believe this is Nvidia's entire list of 3D Vision "Ready" titles (the ones in bold, i played).

  1. Resident Evil 5
  2. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  4. Metro 2033
  5. Just Cause 2
  6. Mafia II
  7. Dead Rising 2
  8. MoH (2010) Multi-Player
  9. Civilization V
  10. Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2
  11. Duke Nukem Forever
  12. Super Street Fighter IV arcade edition
Fortunately, i would say out of the 80 or so games that function with 3D that i tested - none of which were created with S3D in mind; and from the years 2002-2011 - i would say that more than 60 were at least Good or better. That really opened my old library to replaying some of these games.

Now some of these games really need tweaking to make them better than fair. And fortunately there are the tools to do this including 3D Vision hotkeys and support from Nvidia's and WidescreenGaming forums.

After more than 5 months evaluating 3D Vision - along with about 20 guests - i have to give a solid thumbs up to the S3D experience. Considering that every FPS gamer should have a 120Hz display *anyway*; $99 for a pair of (wired) 3D Vision glasses is cheap enough to try it (if you have a 8800 GeForce or newer).

And i am *still* writing my 3D Vision Mega Evaluation over the long weekend (and for the past 2 weeks) ... i have written well over 10,000 words and i have a lot more to say; and of course, i am uploading charts and images
... Hopefully at least Part 1 will be up sometime today (although my goal is to have it all done in one long [really long] review)
- it is beginning to feel like i am writing a book on 3D.

Yeah, that was actually the only 3D game that I owned when I first got it setup. All I saw was the background being given depth and maybe a weird sparkle effect popping out randomly.

I'm actually looking forward to God of War: Origins Collection and the Shadow of the Colossus and ICO Collection as they both are in 3D and they come out 9/13 and 9/27 (respectively).

i don't have any experience with S3D on the PS3; my ASUS 120Hz displays don't have the necessary HDMI 1.4 connections. As i understand it, you are limited to 24fps at 1080p and the full framerate at 720p. With the consoles struggling as they are with 2D, it is tough for them to maintain a high framerate for S3D - not an issue with 3D Vision as long as you have a powerful GPU or SLI.

i would say that if you are playing games on the big screen HD 3DTV, you want the "pop-out" effects. For playing on a smaller LCD as in PC gaming, you want most of the effects to happen "inside" the screen - however, as in SSF-IV Arcade edition, the memorable effects are the combos that wiz toward your nose.

Crysis 2 has a really good 3D Vision implementation. Just Cause 2 looks incredible in 3D Vision Surround (5760x1080).

OK, i'm back to writing
