Is $270 a good price on a Intel Core 2 Duo, 4-core, Q6700, 2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz

Q6600 is cheaper and overclock just as well. I missed a clearance several months back on Q6600 for less than $200.

It's an excellent price, but if I were you I would think about waiting 2-3 months for penryn, especially if you have a rig that you can just drop a penryn into (which would imply you have a pretty modern PC).

WHAT??? The penryn equivalent to Q6600 will be 2.5 ghz with 6mb of cache instead of 2.4 ghz with 8mb cache. they should be very close in performance, but I would give a very slight nod to the penryn due to the minor arch advancements and 100mhz clock advantage. Oh, and the msrp will be 266 on the Q9300 or Q9330 or whatever then end up calling it, so it will be priced identically at launch.

I'm more excited about the Q9450 with its 8x multi, 12mb cache, and $50 price permium :)

Oh, don't forget about the significantly improved power consumption/heat dissipation for penryn, which should also translate into better overclocking.

Several months ago, the Q6600's were over $500.

MSRP $316...:)
January launch.

That's what I've been waiting on, not the Q6600.

I'm sure the Q9450 will be jacked up in price on NewEgg and some other etailers until the hype dies down.

As usual but that's just life. At least we know before hand that that is the way it is going to be and be a total surprise when it happens.

... except that's not the MSRP ;)

That's the price if you buy 1,000 OEM chips directly from Intel :D

I don't think he would have any trouble acquiring all 1,000 of those OEM chips himself ...

(hint: look at his sig ;))

So back to the quesiton at hand. Should I go for that chip. I'm not made of money and am tieing myself into a tight budget.. Since I have to upgrade ram, mobo, graphics card, maybe a hard drive.

I will be getting that one myself too. 12MB cache? Amazing...

seems like a good price, considering the q6600 is the same price right now. might as well jump on it if it's a retail chip.

As usual, supply/demand works its magic. Lots of early adopters whined and complained about Newegg (and others) pricing of the Q6600.. because it was higher than they were expecting (or hoping) to pay. Apparently they forgot that the best way to get prices down is to *not buy* something that, in your opinion, is priced too high. Reduced demand is wonderful at lowering prices.

Yesterday Newegg had the 30GB Zune, in brown, on sale for $99.. yet the 30GB Zune, in white, was selling for $189. Hmm... I wonder which one is more popular. ;) (side note: Newegg probably wouldn't sell it at a loss, so if they can sell a Zune for $99 because of the color and at least break even, guess what their profit is on the identical (sans color) $189 Zune!)

at stock obviously the penryn is a better buy but i believe that people who plan to overclock would prefer a Q6600 over Q9450 being that overclocking with that specific penryn would be more NB limited than CPU limited . seeing that most Q6600's is capable of 400 fsb with 8 or 9 multi( with good cooling). To get a higher clock than Q6600 and to justify buying a Q9450 over it 450+ fsb would be required and that would be really pushing it for most boards

just my 2 cents...please comment as i could be thinking on the wrong page

Higher base FSB, lower multipliers.

Youll be motherboard limited.
