Try playing WOW or EQ2.

The exact parts in my old gaming rig :( It played c&c generals... quite well... kinda :(

You will not lose dual channel, but your winnie can't run 4 sticks at 200Mhz @ 1t command rate. Personally, I can't run CAS 2 with 4 sticks either unless the CPU is clocked absurdly low(Must be too much stress for the mem controller at higher speeds).

StarMan and X you guys are right I overlooked those MMORPGs.

Still, for the most part, both of those games are much more graphics card limited, especially EQ2. Gamespot had a review of WOW --> 1 gig was running very smooth in their video (compared 256 vs. 512 vs. 1024) Here. It seems 1 gig is smooth enough for gaming from their video. Of course the scene they showed wasnt that intensive.

EQ2 is 100% videocard limited. Even x850xt pe Struggles. I can see how 2 gigs could give you a benefit in EQ2 given the level of detail, but it'll still be slow until G70 or R520 arrive. As you can tell from the benchmarks, even if you had 2 gigs of ram, it's not going to allow a user to increase image quality because the gpus simply cannot cope with anything above Balanced. And there is no question that a system with 1 gig of ram and G70 and R520 will smoke anything that has 2 gigs of ram and 6800Ultra or x850xt pe in any game. Sure ram adds performance, but nothing like what the graphics card does.

So, i'll change my statement saying that 2 gigs does benefit in some cases, but it's not worth it imo. I'd instead put $ towards a new videocard if he has money to blow.

I think it would be wise to buy 2GB now. As someone said earlier, BF2 will play best with 2GB. Back when 512MB was the norm, BF1942 came and to many's surprise, it wasn't enough to get running smoothly. So many upgraded to 1GB and found a huge increase. I think that it will be the same with BF2.

video editing is not RAM eating like it is CPU eating. i went from .5 gig to 1 gig and noticed no difference. now photoshop and other memory hogs will benefit greatly. super pi will practically compute twice as fast with extra memory.

You will see a very significant performance increase by going from 1GB to 2GB in EQ2. The page filing as you move from zone to zone is freaking painful when you only have 1GB, and only gets worse as the game goes on.

Regarding Battlefield 2: if someone can find the link, there's an interview with an EA designer who admits that in order to run the game on HIGH settings you're going to need 2GBs of RAM.

Any computer I built today would have 2x1024 ram in it. At today's prices, there's no reason not to.

Also, I'd make sure the mobo has 4 dimm slots; it's such a pain to be limited to three :)

I noticed a big difference going from 1 gig to 2 gigs. All my benches have gone up significantly and my high-end games play much better. And obviously my vid encoding-decoding has improved dramatically. Depends on what you do.

adobe premiere gave me a out of memory error on a 80 meg video when I had 2gb.. i was like wtf.. upgrading to 4 was great for me... my video chews a lot of memory.. what are you using for video editing anyway

By the time I need 2 gb of ram, ddr2 or some other type of memory will be needed.

I am thinking of selling off my ram and getting 4 sticks of 1GB through Crucial @ 129 ea. (I use PC3200 ECC, unreg).

No one application will be able to utlize it because of the way windows XP is (non 64bit)/the 32bit architecture of current processors (unless of course you've got AMD64 but then you've got problems with running at T2 speeds)

For games, save for a VERY select few that can be counted on a hand (EQ2, or SW:Galaxies if you blast the graphics) there are very few games that show strides with 2 gigs of ram.

1 Gig is the current sweet spot for now and the forseeable future. For others to say that 2 gig benefits over 1 gig for gaming, show me benchmarks.

Photoshop maybe another story, that depends on how large of canvasses you work with...and video editing can also use up ram fast (although video ENCODING uses very little ram...)

But for those who play games, to say that 2 gig is worth 1 gig doesn't truthfully apply, unless a person's wallet is that fast. By the time 2 gigs becomes worthful, it'll be like a person stuck with 1 gig of pc2100 ram wanting to move to A64 but not wanting to buy new ram and still not wanting the preformance hit they will take.

1 Gig is good for now and I wouldn't reccomend anymore.

I'd spend the money on some apps to take advantage of the 1GB that you already have. ;)

I know it makes a difference when you've got a lot going on. What I noticed is things just continued to be smooth with no hitching or slowdowns.

I picked up an old Precision 530 with 2 GB Ram and 1 Xeon 2.8GHZ 512L2 cache hyperthreading and I picked up another processor from Ebay.

Although it is only 4x AGP, it is really cool to see dual hyperthreading processors which shows up as 4 processors in Task Manager.

ya, who has link ? IF THIS CONFIRM TO BE TRUE, then there is a big reason we need 2GB of ram and BF2 is a beginning of 2gb Era.
