Is 1680x1050 a standard High Def resolution?

In other words, if I eventually get an HD-DVD player, will it fill the screen at that resolution without distortion?

well 1680x1050 = 16:10, and 1920x1080 (1080p) = 16:9, so no, its not a normal HD resolution, and you will have to run black bars at the top and bottom to maintain aspect ratio. what display is this? some 20" or 22" LCD i presume...

Even if you get a standard aspect ratio / resolution you're going to end up with black bars on a lot of stuff :p

What do you mean by distortion, actually?

It's a notebook screen.

I just don't want what happens with a regular DVD when set to full screen where it gets grainy.....that what I meant by distortion.

ah, i see. well that shouldn't happen, unless it is a product of the display.

Yeah, that's fine so long as the video takes up the entire panel.

thats what we are saying, it isn't going to take up the entire panel without skewing the image.

Well the actual video part will not.

you'll have black bars because your horizontal res isn't high enough. much of your vertical res will go to waste.

and you need to understand that lots of DVD's have black bars on them, even the 16:9 ones (LOTR, for example). so you can never escape them forever.

About 1/2 - 3/4 inch black bars on both top and bottom. Not really a big deal, and a hell of a lot better than a 4:3 screen. ( I dual 20" wides =) )
