spliffstar69, how old are you? That factors into how much $/hr you're worth.

Though, it's probably $0...you seem to be charging your friend new prices for your old parts (?), don't know what motherboard you're giving him, and you're acting like a 12 year old (see: "hmm.. good question I think my time is worth $1k per Sec. yep" ). Though your heatware indicates that you have been trading for 5 years...which throws things off a bit.

Get him a Dell he'll thank you and you'll thank yourself later.

If you browse the hot deals forum, you can find plenty of cheap parts. I just bought a WD 120 gb special edition hard drive for 55$ after rebate and 120$ before.

I built a better computer for my Uncle, $400 it cost. I cut him a couple deals because of all the Hot Deals leftovers I had and I gave him the case for free (another hot deal @ Fry's). Anyway, I billed him for $390 or whatever the real total was (including CA tax) and then $20 for AE shipping. His wife (my aunt) sent me a check for $650. $450 for the computer, $150 for my College Fund and then $50 for spending money. Karma pays off.

And this was at least 6 months ago, now I could probably get it down to $300. What is the HP All in One computer thing anyway?

But I would like to build it
I didn't realize if I profit AT THE MOST $300 was ripping him off.

let me state this to clear up a few things the only used items on the list are the the cpu,128ram,modem & sound card.

You don't want to refer him to Dell because you'd like to build it for "AT THE MOST $300" all in profit.

And your only used items are the cpu ram modem and soundcard? I'd be pissed if I were paying $1500 for a system that's using a used (even for an hour) or OEM cpu.

I don't want to flame, but you're crazy. You shouldn't be building computers for people if you're buying everything local and charging up to $300 for labor. I'd say its an extra 500-600 your "friend" has to pay due to your labor and retail prices.

everything I have is NIB
Fry's has a 2400+ and K7S5A Pro for $70 every other week, get someone to buy that, ship it to you, take back the mobo and keep your used CPU.

$300 for labor is okay. It's the other $300 because he's buying overpriced, local, retail stuff that isn't. Figure it takes him time to buy/order the stuff, put it together, install Windows, and drivers $300 isn't bad. For a friend though, $300 is a rip off - for a client it's not.

spliffstar69:

You are really charging way to much for lots of the parts. And then on top of that, you want to make some profit.

For example: 128 DDR Ram which I assume is used, for $20? You can get a new 256mb stick for that much.

SBlive 5.1 again I assume used, for $40? You can easily get an Audigy 1 for that price.

...and so forth.

If you want to overcharge him on parts, that's fine, but don't ask for more money on top of that. You're profit should come from the overpriced items, which most of the things you listed are.

From what you've said, it sounds like you are just interested in the money and not actually trying to help a friend out.

Seriously, tell him to just buy a Dell. He can get all new parts for way less than that.

From reading his posted, I don't see him includes any softwares, such as, OS or app. It is more likely costs his "friend" an extra hunderds buck for the stuff he needs.

BTW spliffstar66, did you disclose to your "friend" that you use "used" stuff to build his computer?

Just pray to god that your friend doesnt have another friend that is anywhere remotely close to computer literate.

I agree, this guy is being an ass to his "friend". You claim you need to get the system together by this weekend or something? Just pay for 2 day shipping from newegg, and buy most of the parts there. The shipping evens out, and he will save 200 dollars probably......

128MB is not "a little less" than 512MB of ram the dell is offering. You can BARELY run XP on 128MB of ram. I often run out with my 256MB ram.... If I saw someone selling a computer with 128MB of ram nowadays, for over 500 dollars, I would think "ripoff"

1800+? Give me a fricking break, give him a 2500+ at least....

you are just asking us for permission to rip your friend off so you feel ok about it. Well I aint given ya none.
