is $100,000 / year still a good salary?

i can see it being good for a single person, maybe for a couple with no kids. what about couple +1 kid? +2 kids? +3 kids? is this still enough to make a good living? read an article earlier where the author thinks 100k just isn't what it used to be.

I'd say its not bad. Maybe with a couple kids things could get tight. I'm sure quite a few people would love to be making 100k.

It's enough to live and save a little, that's about it. It's really nothing special anymore. Not some magical number where you'll be wealthy. After taxes it's only about 5500 a month take home.

Oh, and introduce that author to a little thing called inflation.

Depends entirely on where you live. Where I grew up (small town OK), 100k would put you in the top 5% probably, and would be upper middle class even with 3-5 kids.

In NYC, that's nothing.

A hundred grand? Hell, that's not worth getting out of bed for...

How about a box full?

Here it would be a lot. I bring home 1/3 of that and I can afford a 4 bedroom house, car, most of the tech gadgets I want, and still save a little. 2/3 of that would be enough to support a family while not sacrificing my standard of living.

Well theres quite a few families down in the trailer park with 8 kids living off 20K/year, so I guess 100K should be doable 😀

Think also its how you live too if you like expensive toys it isn't much money but if paying off a corolla and a small mortage it should be plenty🙂

Aren't you the guy that drives a Honda minivan and always talks about walking away from the insurmountable amount of credit card debt you've racked up? Now you can't be bothered for a 100k a year. Lol

This

Here 100k/yr would get you a nice house for your family and allow you to save as well

Depends on your lifestyle. I make a bit less than 50K a year as a doorman (salary +bonus/holiday tips) in Manhattan and I'm doing fine. Of course "doing fine" may not be acceptable to many especially in NYC...or ATOT. 😛

My parents combined made just south of that with me and my brother. We made it thru, not the best stuff on earth but very manageable. That's in a big city like Chicago. But now with inflation and other junk, I think its cutting it close

It depends on where you live. In the midwest, that is quite a bit of money. In the Bay area or NYC? Not so much.

Depends on a lot. Location, taste, family, age, type of job, hours, etc.

Am I fresh out of school making 100k on my own in a nice but not expensive midwest city? Or am I already in my 40s with a family in Chicago or NYC?

Depends entirely on location. Here that would be far more than enough. My GF and I probably make < $70,000 a year combined and we're doing fine. Have a nice apartment while saving for a house, have a new car, and have no problem affording our bills or the toys we want. Sure more money would be nice, but we aren't hurting either. Of course if we had kids that would probably make a big difference in how much savings and disposable income we have.

single earner 100k is the top 5%. for the entire US.

Agreed. Where you're living is everything, cost of living-wise. In south Texas $200K puts you in a 3000SF, two car house on a 1/2 acre in a nice neighborhood. In NYC $200K gets you a bus pass for 6 months.
