I talked to one of my math professors, and he says that 1 = .999... but that it is a contradiction.

For 1 to != .999... that would mean that there would need to be a number you could add to .999... to equal 1. However, since anything you add to .999... would make a number larger than 1, 1 must equal .999...

I argued that 1 != .999..., but I did not think of this. Is that what you guys were refering to in previous posts?
 
That's just it though, you simply add the 1 - 0.9999.... = left over stuff.... that you can add to 0.9999... = 1.

Therefore 0.9999 != 1.

Just expressing my opinion... most of the post made after post 200 were one liners simply to keep the thread alive and clog the front page with a pointless topic (note: pointless after it was argued into the ground).

To those who are curious, it only added like 400 posts to my overall post count. Apparently it only registers the ++postcount every second or two. I was at 5700 before that.

The fallacy here is that since 1 = 0.99999...; then 1 - 0.999999... = 0.

A simple proof is that since there exist no number a, such that 0.99999...<a<1, then 0.99999... = 1.
