heard some people would NEVER consider giving the IRS their deposit acct #, would rather wait for the check in the mail....

is there a rational concern about this?

they could easily get the info anyway, so to me it's not a big concern.

The IRS knows my ssn, birthday, mother's maiden name, where I live, what jobs I worked, what I bought, how much I drive..

I don't think I would be too concerned about them knowing a bank deposit number..

A lot of people have a sad and unfounded fear of big brother. This is the sort of thing that motivates people to not use direct deposit, and to not wear a seatbelt, simply as an act of rebellion. Others are just ignorant. A guy at work - with a bank account - years into working for us still takes cheques. WTF is wrong with him? He also has THOUSANDS of dollars in a savings account. Helllooooo? Investment - ever hear that word? He's from India so I guess he's got a different financial outlook on things.

The IRS has had all my bank account numbers for years since the bank reports the interest earned to the IRS.

I pretty much assume that the government already knows everything there is to know about me already.

I've been getting refund checks via direct deposite for a few years now. what would *really* rock was if companies started offering rebates/refunds via direct deposite... no more sitting around waiting for 2-3 months for that $15 rebate.

Then they'd have the money for less time, and more people doing rebates, and suddenly we'd have no more rebates!

But then how could they then claim the check was lost in the mail and you're outta luck? ;)

I've used direct deposit for my tax refunds for several years. Never a problem and it arrives 2-3 weeks faster than a paper check.

Unless you have something to hide, I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.

DD works just fine. Been doing it since it was availible. Faster and no check to get lost in the mail as so often seems to happen in Floriduh.

Social Security does most of its paying by DD these days. Not sure if you can even get a paper check anymore.

This past year was the first year I'd done direct deposit.

Wasn't that big of a deal and I got my refund pretty quickly.

I got my refund direct deposited about a week after filing online with H&R Block, even before sending in the signature form.

Fvck No?

REad the verbage on Direct Deposit. You are giving them direct access to your checking account, so they can deposit or take out as much as they want.

Do you really trust govenrment employees with your checking account?

Paranoid much?
Don't you think that when you deposit this govt. check they have access to all the transaction records for it?

I would take direct deposit in a split second, but unfortunately I have to pay more, so I have direct withdrawal :(

For those who don't know it already:

When you deposit a check, your bank, or even yourself, will write the account number down on the back of the check you're depositing...

Then whomever issued that check to you can see the cancelled check and see your account info. That is all.
